Former Navy SEAL trainer offers free self-defense workshop

Self DefenseFormer Navy SEALs mixed martial arts trainer Kenton Russell will lead a free self-defense training workshop for ages 12 and older Saturday on the campus of Fort Hays State University at Cunningham Hall, room 110 from 9 a.m. to noon.

According to FHSU’s Women’s Leadership Project, the workshop will focus on situational awareness, common perpetrator tactics, an introduction to simple and effective physical and verbal self-defense and  risk reduction techniques.

Russell, currently an instructor of Police Sciences at FHSU has 30 years of experience in mixed martial arts training and has trained high-profile individuals  including Secret Service agents,  FBI agents and SWAT team members.

FHSU students who have been trained as Defensive Tactics Coaches will also assist Russell with the training.

Participants under the age of 18 must provide a signed permission slip from a parent or legal guardian.

The workshop is sponsored by the FHSU Women’s Leadership Project, FHSU Defensive Tactics Club, FHSU Department of Health and Human Performance and the FHSU Panhellenic Council.
