Kan. man gets 11 years added to sentence in 2010 slaying

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Topeka man was sentenced to just over 11 years in prison for a shooting death in Topeka, which will be served after about 80 years he is serving for other crimes.

Stephen Alan Macomber was sentenced Thursday for involuntary manslaughter in the 2010 death of 26-year-old Ryan Lofton at the victim’s home.

Macomber was convicted in 2012 of second-degree murder but the Kansas Court of Appeals ordered a retrial.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports after Macomber shot Lofton, he shot and wounded a Marshall County deputy in Blue Rapids, then held an elderly woman hostage during a police standoff. He was sentenced to 80 years and one month for those crimes.

He also had convictions in 1985 in Sedgwick County and a 1992 Reno County case.

Kan. mother’s competency hearing in 10-year-old’s death set for May

WELLINGTON, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas woman accused of killing her 10-year-old son will undergo a mental competency hearing in May.

During a brief court hearing Thursday in Sumner County, an attorney for 33-year-old Lindsey Nicole Blansett said he wanted to question a psychologist who evaluated Blansett before a judge decides whether she is fit to stand trial. She is charged with first-degree murder in the Dec. 14 stabbing death of Caleb Blansett at the family’s home in Wellington.

The hearing was set for May 14.

The Wichita Eagle reports  that a criminal complaint in the case alleges Blansett decided Caleb’s life would be full of suffering and it would be better for him to go to heaven. She called 911 to report the stabbing.

CHICAGO (AP) – A benches-clearing fight led to five ejections several innings before Eric Hosmer hit the go-ahead double in the 13th to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 3-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday night.

With two outs, Hosmer’s hit off Chicago’s Jake Petricka (0-1) brought in Jarrod Dyson. Wade Davis then pitched a scoreless 13th for his fourth save, giving Franklin Morales (2-0) the victory.

Kansas City won for the fourth time in five games in a game in which tempers flared.

Yordano Ventura snagged a grounder from Chicago outfielder Adam Eaton and they appeared to exchange words before Ventura threw to first to end the seventh inning. Eaton was restrained from Ventura.

Players from both dugouts and bullpens ran onto the field and punches were thrown during a fight that lasted a couple of minutes.

Honors College 2-WebFHSU University Relations

The new Honors College at Fort Hays State University will begin its first year in the fall with a class of 31 students, 17 of them incoming freshmen plus one transfer student and a current student joining the honors program.

They will join 12 students converting from the Distinguished Scholars Program, which the Honors College replaces. The idea in both is to provide a challenging curriculum across the range of programs for academically gifted and ambitious students.

Eighteen of the students qualified for three scholarships created especially for the Honors College.

“We have a great incoming class, and we exceeded our incoming freshman goal by 60 percent,” said Matt Means, director of the Honors College. He also founded the predecessor Distinguished Scholars Program.

Watch an interview with Means by Community Connections’ Mike Cooper here.

“This is a very auspicious beginning for the FHSU Honors College and augurs well for the future,” he said. “It is a testament to a phenomenal sense of teamwork from a great number of committed FHSU students, faculty and staff that this was accomplished in only three and a half months.”

“This is an impressive cadre of bright young minds,” said FHSU President Mirta M. Martin. “Matt Means and his team have accomplished in three and a half months what it has taken other universities two and a half years to accomplish. I want to thank them all for making our founding class of the Honors College so very impressive and for instilling in these young people a passion to make FHSU their destination of choice.”

Of the college scholarship winners, two won full-ride Regents Scholarships, which provide full tuition and housing to qualifying students from in or out of state. It also provides up to $450 per semester for books.

Twelve students qualified for $10,000 FHSU Honors College Scholarships, which provide $4,000 for tuition and fees and $6,000 toward room and board. The housing award is dependent on the student living on the honors floor established in McMindes Hall.

Four others qualified for $6,700 FHSU Honors College Scholarships, which provide $2,700 for tuition and fees and $4,000 for housing. The housing award, again, is dependent on the recipient living in university housing designated for Honors College students.
