Northwest Kansas adult care home earns state praise

Kansas Department on Aging and Disability Services

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department on Aging and Disability Services announced Tuesday that Progressive Care Home Plus LLC received zero deficiencies as a result of the facility’s survey conducted by the department on Feb. 3.

In 2014, only 2.2 percent of all Kansas nursing homes surveyed by the department were found to be deficiency free.

“Progressive Care Home Plus LLC has set a high standard for all the facilities across our state to aspire to match. Administrator Donna Gregory and her team at Progressive Care Home Plus LLC should be very proud of this accomplishment,” Bruffett said.

Progressive Care Home Plus LLC is licensed as a home plus located at P13 Mill in Alton.

KDADS’ Survey, Certification and Credentialing Commission conducts unannounced inspections of the state’s 340 nursing homes annually.

Insurance companies say 2014 exchange members older, sicker

health insuranceTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The two companies that sell insurance on the Kansas exchange say people who signed up last year tended to be older and sicker than they had anticipated.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports representatives from insurance companies, hospitals and other groups connected to health care reform spoke Tuesday at Kansas Health Institute. All agreed the laws implementation still has some flaws.

Matt All, senior vice president and general counsel at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas, says those who signed up last year filed more expensive claims than the average pool of customers.

Coventry sales director Kevin Curry says it’s too earlier to know whether younger and healthier people who weren’t motivated to sign up during the first year have decided to do so in 2015.

Kansas House panel to review Democratic lawmaker’s remarks

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Six Kansas legislators are reviewing a complaint against a Democratic lawmaker over her remarks during a committee meeting.

The three Republicans and three Democrats were having their first meeting Wednesday.

House rules required the committee’s appointment once the complaint against Democratic Rep. Valdenia Winn of Kansas City was filed by nine GOP lawmakers.

The committee could recommend potential sanctions for the House to consider.

The complaint concerns comments Winn made during a House Education Committee meeting March 19.

Winn criticized a bill to repeal a law giving a tuition break at public universities and colleges to young students living in the U.S. illegally. Winn is black and called the proposal racist.

Two of the complaining lawmakers also are black.

Winn didn’t return telephone messages seeking comment Tuesday evening.
