As a member of KISS, Paul Stanley has reaped the benefits of the band’s voracious penchant for selling branded items, and now the singer/guitarist is set to launch his own lifestyle brand company.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has teamed with the Epic Rights marketing company to create the Paul Stanley: Royals & Rebels brand, which will be introduced next month at the Licensing Expo trade event in Las Vegas.

Among the various products expected to be included in the Royals & Rebels brand are men’s clothing and accessories, food, alcoholic beverages, footwear, cookware, home furnishing items and much more.

Branded items are expected to be available at various retail outlets by the fall of 2016.

“Over the years, [Epic Rights CEO] Dell [Furano] and I have worked closely on the strategic developments and partnerships on the KISS brand, as well as more recently with Rock & Brews and my paintings,” says Stanley in a statement.

“I am excited to watch Dell and Epic Rights’ great team of branding professionals seek out and find opportunities and outlets that will reflect a lifestyle and point of view that I am passionate about and do it imaginatively and creatively in the years to come.”

Furano, meanwhile, calls Stanley “the definitive rock Renaissance man with a sense of style in arts, fashion, design and food that is unrivaled in the music industry.”

Stanley and KISS launch a European tour this Saturday, May 30, with a headlining performance at the Rockavaria Festival in Munich.  Visit KISSOnline.com to check out the band’s full itinerary.

Monstrous new exhibit arrives at Sternberg Museum

BY AMY BALTODANO
Hays Post

A new exhibit has slithered into the Sternberg Museum of Natural History — Titanoboa. This monstrous snake exhibit is on a 15-city national tour and will be at Sternberg through early August.

“This is the biggest snake that we know of that has been found,” said Education and Outreach Director David Levering. “The calculated estimate based on the fossils is 48 feet and 2,500 pounds.”

The fossils, which date back 60 million years, were found in what is currently a Columbian coal mine.

“The area that this snake lived in was a very wet area, with many rivers, streams and lakes,” Levering said.

At the time there were 40 foot crocodiles living in the same environment, and Titanboa was eating smaller, blunt-nosed crocodiles. TITANOBOA PIC 1

The discovery began close to eight years ago, when researchers first began digging out the fossils. At first, these fossils were misidentified.

“The vertebrae was first identified as crocodile. No one was looking for a snake this big,” Levering said. “They were finding these giant vertebrae — they looked reptilian, so they just got wrapped up very lovingly, placed in a box and were labeled ‘crocodile.’ And some graduate students at the University of Florida, one of them was looking at it (and said). ‘It does not look quite right. This does not look like crocodile vertebrae.’ ”

RELATED STORY: Sternberg gears up for another summer of youth camps.

As museum goers walk through the exhibit, there is a video that details and shows how researchers corrected their mistake and how Titanboa has become the exhibit it is today.

According to Levering, the documentary also explains “about the science behind how they figure out how big it was and the environment that it was out of, the plants they were finding in the same environment and how they are basically early relatives of typical tropical plants we have today.”TITANOBOA PIC 2

After finding the first vertebrae, students reached out to David Polly, a paleontologist from Bloomington, Ind.

Levering said “he wrote a program to match the shape of one of these vertebrae to the shape of vertebrae of living snakes. It took him a year to do it.”

The exhibit also contains a live 6-foot-long boa across from Titanoboa — and the extreme difference between the two is impossible to ignore.

“These are the first specimens they are finding of this thing,” Levering said. “There is nothing to say there are not larger ones, yet to be found.”

Kansas House OKs stripped tax bill to speed work on plan

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas House has passed a stripped-down tax bill without debate to speed up work by lawmakers on a final plan for raising new revenues to close a budget shortfall.

The bill approved on a 64-54 vote Friday would create a six-week amnesty program to encourage individuals and businesses to pay back taxes and settle tax disputes with the state.

The $30 million expected from the program is far short of the projected $406 million budget shortfall for the fiscal year beginning July 1.

But the bill’s contents weren’t the point for Republican controlling the chamber.

The vote would allow negotiations between the House and Senate on the final version of a tax plan. Lawmakers still will consider raising sales, tobacco and business taxes to fill the budget hole.
