2 Kan. men hospitalized after train, semi crash and fire

OSWEGO- Two Kansas men were injured in an accident just before 1 p.m. on Wednesday in Labette County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Freightliner semi driven by John J. Tyler, 35, Chanute, approached the train tracks from the west at 7000 Road just west of U.S. 59 and five miles south of Oswego.

A southbound Union Pacific train hit the truck as it began to cross the tracks.

The truck, a Union Pacific maintenance vehicle, then caught fire and was engulfed in flames.

Tyler was transported to Labette Health.

A passenger in the truck Everett Smith, 45, Neodesha, was transported to Freeman Health.

The driver was properly restrained at the time of the collision. The KHP was uncertain if the passenger was wearing a seat belt.
