A number of vehicles in Hays have been identified as “inoperable,” according to Assistant Hays City Manager Paul Briseno, and that’s a violation of city code.
Three vehicle abatements will be reviewed by Hays City Commissioners during their work session tonight.
“A lot of people don’t understand there is a ‘due process’ given to the property owner,” Briseno said. “We try to work with them over a number of weeks, if not months, so they can get the vehicle operable and meeting certain code requirements.
“Our staff will first have met with the owners and looked at the vehicles to ensure they’re operable–if they (the vehicles) aren’t, then this coming before the city commission is a last-ditch effort to make bring them into compliance,” Briseno explained.
The city is required to follow vehicle abatement procedures established by ordinance. Assuming those procedures were followed, the city is allowed to remove and dispose of the vehicle at the owner’s cost.
Other items on tonight’s agenda include a resolution for benefit district in Tallgrass Addition Phase 5, located on north of 13th Street near Commerce Parkway.
Commissioners will also discuss possible removal of one-way designations for 6th and 7th Streets. The item was requested by Commissioner Lance Jones.
The work session starts at 6:30 p.m. July 2 in Hays City Hall, 1507 Main Street.
