Kansas officials warn of jury duty scam

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office is warning about a scam in which would-be victims are told they must pay a fine for missing jury duty.

Sgt. Todd Stallbaumer says the office has received numerous reports of a caller claiming to be with law enforcement. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the scammer tells people a warrant has been issued for their arrest and then provides a telephone number they can call to pay the purported fine.

Stallbaumer says some people even have been instructed to report to the Shawnee County Courthouse where a representative would meet them to collect payment.

Stallbaumer says people who fail to report for jury duty are never asked for money. He says they’re sent a postcard asking them to contact the jury coordinator’s office.
