2 firefighters hospitalized after Trego Co. grass fire

WAKEENEY -Two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion after fighting a grass fire on Sunday afternoon in Trego County.

The fire was reported just after 2 p.m. according to Trego County Rural Fire Director Larry Eberle.

“We aren’t sure what started the fire a mile west of WaKeeny,” he said. “It did burn approximately 25 acres and destroyed a cattle barn.”

Temperatures were near 100 degrees on Sunday with gusty winds.

“Because of the weather, we had an ambulance transport two firefighters to Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital,” said Eberle.  “They are both doing much better today.”
