KHP: High speed chase ends in Russell Co. crash, arrest

Screen Shot 2015-07-16 at 3.02.09 PMRUSSELL -The Kansas Highway Patrol reported in a media release that just after 8 a.m. on Thursday, troopers checked the speed of a westbound 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Joshua Hoffman, 23, Russell, at 101 miles-per-hour.

Before the trooper could catch up, he saw the Pontiac pass a semi on the right shoulder and take the Highway 40 exit.

The Pontiac traveled through the intersection at the bottom of the off-ramp and struck a signpost before driving through a KDOT fence.

The Pontiac got back on Highway 40 and continued to flee west at speeds of 111 miles-per-hour.

Russell County Sheriff’s Deputies and Russell Police deployed stop sticks on the east edge of the city limits. The Pontiac swerved to miss them, lost control of the vehicle and hit a telephone pole and the metal fence around the cemetery.

Hoffman then fled on foot through the cemetery and onto the golf course.

When a trooper caught up to him, Hoffman resisted use a taser to make the arrest. He is being held a the Russell County jail on charges of Felony Flee and Elude, Leaving the scene of an Accident, Felony Possession of a Handgun, Reckless Driving, Driving on a Revoked License, Chemical Test Refusal and DUI, Resisting Arrest and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
