WASHINGTON – Congressman Tim Huelskamp (KS-01) has signed a letter to the Secretary of Defense, along with 70 other members of Congress, urging the reversal of the current firearm ban on military installations. Over 20 years ago, President Clinton issued an ill-advised executive order creating “gun-free zones” on all military installations.

The Congressman has also given his support to legislation authored by Congressman Duncan Hunter, a California Marine who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. This legislation would allow troops manning recruiting stations to either carry weapons or other military security arrangements would be mandated for such facilities.

“It makes no sense to disarm members of our Armed Forces – whether on the battlefield, on base, or in a recruiting office. That’s why I’m signing on to a letter to our Department of Defense secretary and legislation by Duncan Hunter to change that.

“Men and women in the service – or those signing up for the military – shouldn’t be put at risk by depriving them of the right and responsibility to defend themselves, their families, and their co-workers. This isn’t political – it is about doing the right thing and making sure we never have another heartbreaking incident like what occurred at Fort Hood, Navy Yard, and most recently in Chattanooga.”

Congressman Huelskamp supported the National Defense Authorization Act of 2016, which passed the House in May. It included an amendment to reverse this Clinton ban.
