HUTCHINSON – After dropping charges on technical grounds, the state refiled charges against a Kansas man.
Steven Beranek, a Sedgwick County business owner, made another court appearance on Wednesday. He faces charges of human trafficking, aggravated battery, criminal threat, domestic battery, criminal restraint and misdemeanor battery.
The adult, female victim in the case was allegedly held against her will on a farmstead in Reno County from May 2011 to June of 2013.
She escaped and showed up at a Hutchinson area business.
Police and sheriff officials then began the investigation that was made more difficult because of her inability to speak English.
Beranek is also alleged to have battered a 14-month-old child in this case
A new preliminary hearing is scheduled. Beranek remains free on bond.
