The Gorham Community Park 5k Run/Walk is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, with proceeds from the event benefiting the Gorham Community Park and Jana’s Campaign, in conjunction with the 2015 Gorham Street Dance.
The race is sponsored by the Gorham Community Development Association.
While the race is in its fourth year, this is the first time it has partnered with Jana’s Campaign.
“Seventy percent of proceeds will go to support the park and then 30 percent to Jana’s Campaign,” said Amanda Thomas, event organizer. A representative from Jana’s campaign will be at the event Saturday.
“We were hoping to share some of the proceeds with a nonprofit that was local and, with Jana’s campaign being out of Hays and we know some of the board members, it just seems like a good fit to us,” Thomas said.
In previous years, the race has had up to 75 participants and, this year, organizers hope for even more participation.
Participants from previous years will see a different route this year.
“The 5K run is a new course this year. In the past, we had done the same course twice and this year is a new course and so you won’t cover any ground twice,” Thomas said.
Registration is available through race day, with registration from 6:45 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. The cost to participate is $20. Prizes will be awarded to top finishers.
Initially, the price for late registration was $25, but was lowered after flyers for the event went out in an effort to attract more runners, according to Jacquelyn Stoffel, event organizer.
Participants can register online and find more information about the event on their Facebook page.
The street dance will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday and run through midnight.
