Big first inning carries Sr. Monarchs in ‘AA’ state tourney opener

TMP Monarchs LogoThe Hays Monarchs Sr. American Legion sent 10 to the plate and scored six runs in the first inning on their way to a 6-1 win over Marysville Post 163 in the first round of the American Legion ‘AA’ State Tournament Wednesday afternoon in Colby.

Jordan Gottschalk and Ricky Hockett both hit two-run singles in the inning helping the Monarchs to their 10th win in the last 11 games.

Hockett finsihed 2-for-3 and Jared Vitztum added two doubles.

Kameron Schmidt allowed one run on seven hits with three strikeouts and four walks over 5 1/3 innings for his third win of the summer.

The Monarchs improve to 24-7. They will take on Doniphan County in the third game of the day Thursday afternoon around 3 p.m. Doniphan County blanked Larned 6-0 in their opener.

Beloit beat Wellington 12-1 and Colby edged Iola 1-0 in the other first round games.
