The Hays Monarchs Sr. American Legion sent 10 to the plate and scored six runs in the first inning on their way to a 6-1 win over Marysville Post 163 in the first round of the American Legion ‘AA’ State Tournament Wednesday afternoon in Colby.

Jordan Gottschalk and Ricky Hockett both hit two-run singles in the inning helping the Monarchs to their 10th win in the last 11 games.

Hockett finsihed 2-for-3 and Jared Vitztum added two doubles.

Kameron Schmidt allowed one run on seven hits with three strikeouts and four walks over 5 1/3 innings for his third win of the summer.

The Monarchs improve to 24-7. They will take on Doniphan County in the third game of the day Thursday afternoon around 3 p.m. Doniphan County blanked Larned 6-0 in their opener.

Beloit beat Wellington 12-1 and Colby edged Iola 1-0 in the other first round games.
