Medical researchers say fetal tissue remains essential

BOSTON (AP) — The furor on Capitol Hill over Planned Parenthood has stoked a debate about the use of tissue from aborted fetuses in medical research. But U.S. scientists have been using such cells for decades to develop vaccines and seek treatments for ailments ranging from vision loss and neurological disorders to cancer and AIDS.

Anti-abortion activists set off the uproar by releasing undercover videos of Planned Parenthood officials that raise questions about whether the organization is profiting from the sale of fetal tissue. Planned Parenthood denies making any profit, saying it charges fees solely to cover its costs.

University laboratories that buy such cells strongly defend their research. They say tissue that would otherwise be thrown out has played a vital role in lifesaving medical advances and holds potential for further breakthroughs.

KDHE rejects community’s landfill application

KDHECOLUMBUS, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas health department has returned Galena’s application for a landfill permit because it doesn’t meet state requirements.

The Joplin Globe reports the Kansas Department of Health and Environment told Galena Mayor Dale Oglesby recently in a letter that the city’s landfill application can’t be processed because it lacks the signatures needed from county government officials.

Oglesby said Monday the KDHE action was expected.

The Galena City Council approved plans for a landfill in 2014 but rescinded them after widespread opposition. Oglesby then presented the application to county commissioners in April and requested the county provide information for it.

But Richard Hilderbrand, chairman of the county panel, told Oglesby the landfill proposal did not meet the county’s trash plan, which states no more dumps should be created.

Phone scam plagues FHSU students

By COOPER SLOUGH
Hays Post

With college classes starting next week, some students have been receiving phone calls from numbers claiming to be from the IRS. In response, the Fort Hays State University Financial Assistance Office has sent out an email warning students not to field these calls, and instead contact the police immediately.

The scammers reportedly reference the student’s school as FHSU and claim the students owe a substantial amount of money (usually over $1000) that must be paid immediately over the phone, under threat of court action. Some callers even threaten a suspension of drivers license.

The FHSU Financial Assistance Office has released a list of common characteristics for these calls.

Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers, and may be able to recite the last four digits of the victims social security number. Scammers have also been known to imitate the IRS toll-free number on victim’s caller ID. Occasionally scammers have also been known to send bogus IRS emails to victims to support their bogus calls.

If you or someone you know has been the recipient of one of these bogus calls, the financial assistance office asks that you notify the University Police Department at (785) 628-5304.

Teachers union, Hays USD 489 to continue negotiations Tuesday

The USD 489 Board of Education and the Hays National Education Association Negotiation teams will host another negotiating session tonight in the Toepfer Board Room, 323 West 12th St. at 5:30 p.m.

Both negotiating teams have struggled recently to come to a consensus on accumulation and payout of accrued leave and required hours in a work day.

While a final agreement is unlikely to come at Tuesday’s meeting, progress has been made in recent weeks with some points of contention – including the grandfathering in of long term teachers in the amount of sick days that will be paid out – being agreed upon by both teams.
