Poll: Who do you think won the Republican debate?

gop 1

CLEVELAND (AP) — Last night was the first debate between the top Republican presidential candidates, based on recent polls. And chaos erupted in Cleveland from the start, when the ten candidates were asked who was unwilling to pledge his support to the eventual nominee of the Republican Party and who was unwilling to pledge to not run an independent campaign against that person. Only Donald Trump raised his hand.

Bicyclist gets 5 years for Kan. road rage shooting

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A bicyclist has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison for shooting a motorist in the face in a fit of road rage last year in Wichita.

Twenty-nine-year-old Jonathan Newcomb was sentenced Thursday to 59 months in prison and ordered to pay more than $19,600 in restitution. He had pleaded guilty to attempted intentional second-degree murder on June 8.

According to prosecutors, Newcomb was riding a bicycle on Aug. 13, 2014, when he and Luis Leon-Olmos nearly collided. Newcomb tried to cross the driveway of a parking lot when Leon-Olmos’ pickup attempted to turn.

A confrontation ensued and prosecutors say video surveillance shows Newcomb pulling out a pistol from a holster and shooting Leon-Olmos in the face. Leon-Olmos lost his left eye in the shooting.

Newcomb was arrested a short time later.

Mommy and Me room opens in Forsyth Library

Mothers at Fort Hays State University now have another private and welcoming environment to breast-feed their babies.

The first FHSU Mommy and Me room was opened in January 2015 in Stroup Hall. The room was utilized throughout the spring semester by faculty, staff and students, receiving rave reviews from all.

With the support of Deborah Ludwig, dean of Forsyth Library, the second Mommy and Me room, located on the lower level of Forsyth Library, room 050, will open for fall 2015.

Each room provides private space where nursing mothers are welcome to express milk or nurse during their time on campus. All rooms feature a comfortable chair and an electrical outlet, with convenient access to restroom facilities. Both Mommy and Me rooms are open during normal business hours.

The project to open the rooms began with the efforts of Kathleen Ward, associate professor of nursing, and her involvement with the Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition. The coalition advocates for the development of rooms in area businesses and places of employment to benefit moms and their employers.

“Research shows that breast-feeding is beneficial to both the mother and baby,” said Ward. “This means that they will take less sick days for themselves and babies.”

In June, FHSU received a Bronze Award from the Kansas Business Case for Breastfeeding for its efforts in supporting young families on campus.

“In keeping with Dr. Martin’s family philosophy, we wanted to make sure that all new breast-feeding mothers and babies are taken care of,” said Ward.

For more information, contact Ward at [email protected] or at (785) 628-4660.

Chip cards? Small business owners unaware of planned changes

JOYCE M. ROSENBERG, AP Business Writer

NEW YORK (AP) — A majority of small-businesses owners are unaware of an impending shift that could leave them liable for fraud committed with a new generation of chip-imbedded credit cards.

That’s the finding of a survey by Wells Fargo & Co., which asked 600 small-business owners about the Oct. 1 deadline to get card readers and software to handle the new credit cards. Retailers and other businesses without equipment to handle the cards could be liable starting Oct. 1 if a customer commits fraud with a chip card.

But in the Wells Fargo survey, only 49 percent of owners of businesses that use card readers for transactions said they were aware of the deadline.

Kansas utility’s electric rates would rise $78M under deal

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The largest electric company in Kansas has reached an agreement with a consumer advocacy agency and other parties to scale back a proposed increase in the utility’s annual rates to $78 million.

Westar Energy Inc. announced Thursday that it had a settlement with the Citizens’ Utility Ratepayers Board, the staff of the Kansas Corporation Commission and all other parties in its rate case. Westar had sought a $152 million rate increase.

The KCC sets utility rates and must sign off on the deal.

Westar had said it needed a rate increase primarily to cover costs already incurred for power plant improvements mandated by federal air pollution standards.

The company said that under the agreement households will see their electric bills rise between $5 and $7 a month.

Regional firefighters train for trench rescues over weekend

By RICKY KERR
Hays Post

Crews from area fire departments completed rescue training Monday for trench cave-in scenarios east of the Hays Water Plant, 1000 Vine. The training, sponsored by the Kansas Fire and Training Rescue Institute, covered everything from site prep, how to use equipment, and securing trench walls.

“It’s a specialized training,” said Hays Fire Department Deputy Chief Ryan Hagans. “It’s an important aspect of what we do, because this type of training can be utilized for somewhere else, say a building collapse where we have to shore up walls to make a tunnel to someone.”

According to Hagans, participants include the HFD, City of Ellis Fire Department, Ellis County Rural Fire Department, and City of Victoria Fire Department. These four groups make up the Northwest Kansas Regional Technical Rescue Team, a group responsible for rescue operations in the 17 counties of northwest Kansas.

The group meets on a quarterly basis and once a year with the KFRTI to go over certain disciplines of technical rescue.
