Thomas More Prep-Marian High School students Melissa Pfeifer and John Drees have been named Commended Students in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors.

Over 1.5 million students in more than 22,000 high schools enter the National Merit Scholarship Program each year.

About 34,000 of the 50,000 high scorers in each annual National Merit Program are named Commended Student on the basis of a national Selection Index qualifying score, applicable to all participants without regard to state-by-state distribution. The qualifying score for this level of recognition varies from year to year. All National Merit Program participants who score at or above the Commended level but below their selection unit’s Semifinalist qualifying score are designated Commended Students.

“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” said a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

TMP-M Parent-Teacher-Friends and Darrell Gregg of RD Graphics have graciously donated the funds and work to update the National Merit plaque. This plaque has not be updated since 1999. With the help of PTF, Gregg and Kathy Taylor, all the previous National Merit Students have all been added to the plaque. This plaque will be hung in the front foyer next to the portrait of St. Thomas More and the TMP-M Medal of Excellence plaque.
