BALTIMORE (AP) – Chris Davis hit his league-leading 42nd home run, Jonathan Schoop added a pair of solo shots and the Baltimore Orioles took the three-game series against the Kansas City Royals with an 8-2 victory Sunday night.

The Orioles have won four of their past five as they try to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Royals lost seven of nine and dropped their third straight series for the first time this season.

Orioles left-hander Wei-Yin Chen (9-7) kept the Royals off-balance with his slider and changeup. He allowed two runs on six hits with two strikeouts over seven innings.

Schoop had three hits and has 14 home runs on the season. Adam Jones had two hits, including his 27th homer, with four RBIs.

Royals right-hander Johnny Cueto (2-6) lost his fifth straight start. He allowed a season-high eight runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts and one walk over 6 1-3 innings. He tied a career-high by allowing four homers and has given up 28 runs over his past 26 1-3 innings.

Kan. School District to use bus drivers as custodians

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The Wichita School District says it plans to use bus drivers as part-time custodians as part of a pilot program to keep schools clean and costs down.

The Wichita Eagle reports Wichita school board members will consider a contract Monday with First Student to provide workers to clean cafeterias at 16 elementary schools this semester. First Student is the bus transportation provider for the school district.

According to the district’s director of operations Darren Muci, several schools moved custodians to later shifts to clean classrooms, hallways and common areas at the end of the school day. That left the schools in need of extra help at lunchtime, but Muci said there were not enough funds to hire additional custodians.

Man charged in stabbing of his father at Kansas home

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A man has been charged in the stabbing of his 74-year-old father in Wichita.

The Wichita Eagle reports 36-year-old Jay F. Howey was charged Friday with attempted first-degree murder. According to police, the victim’s wife found him with several stab wounds when she arrived at the suspect’s home on Sept. 9.

According to authorities, Howey stabbed his father multiple times after his father had arrived to help him clean. The man was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Howey’s next hearing is scheduled for Sept. 23. It was not immediately clear if he has an attorney.

Government: Students can apply earlier for college aid

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is announcing changes to the federal college aid system that are intended to help students get a better and earlier handle about whether they can afford school.

Students and their families will be able to fill out the federal aid form in October — the traditional start of the college application season — for the school year that begins the following fall.

They now must wait until January.

The government uses the form to determine aid eligibility. The White House says requiring students to wait until January slows down the process, and makes it harder for them to qualify for private scholarships and figure out whether they can pay for college.

President Barack Obama is announcing the changes Monday when he meets with Iowa high school students.

DENVER (AP) — Former Ravens safety Darian Stewart, who followed Gary Kubiak from Baltimore to Denver over the winter, snatched the ball from tight end Crockett Gillmore in the end zone with 28 seconds left to seal a 19-13 win for Peyton Manning and the Broncos on Sunday.

Joe Flacco drove the Ravens to the Denver 16 in the final minute. One play before Stewart’s interception, cornerback Brady Roby got a hand in Steve Smith Sr.’s face and a would-be touchdown catch bounded away from the veteran receiver.

Cornerback Jimmy Smith’s 24-yard pick-6 was Baltimore’s only touchdown and Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib responded with a 51-yard interception return for a TD that put Denver ahead for good 16-13.

Manning was 24 of 40 for 175 yards and a paltry 59.9 passer rating. His four sacks were his most since Oct. 20, 2013.

14th-ranked FHSU men’s soccer knocks off 12th-ranked CSU-Pueblo on the road

PUEBLO, Colo. – Fort Hays State Men’s Soccer bounced back from a 4-2 loss at UC-Colorado Springs on Friday night to win a battle of top-15 ranked teams in NCAA Division II on Sunday. The 14th-ranked Tigers fell down 1-0 early, but rallied to defeat 12th-ranked CSU-Pueblo 2-1 in Pueblo.

The Tigers surrendered a goal in the sixth minute of the match, but about 12 minutes later they found the equalizer with a magnificent bicycle kick goal by Mauricio Castorino. The goal came on a long ball sent to the other end of the field from goalkeeper Michael Yantz. After Yantz’s kick bounced once and a CSU-Pueblo player headed the ball further, Castorino adjusted at the top of the box and stunned the goalkeeper with the dazzling kick that clipped the top of his glove before finding the goal.

The Tigers took the lead in the 63trd minute on Tomiwa Olaniran’s first goal of the season, assisted by Castorino. The Tiger defense and goalkeeper Yantz made the 2-1 lead stand up over the next 27 minutes, pushing the Tigers to 3-1 on the season. CSU-Pueblo moved to the same mark, suffering its first loss of the season.

Yantz is now 3-1 on the season at goalkeeper. CSU-Pueblo had 11 shots in the match, but Yantz only had to save one. The Tigers put seven of their 13 shots in the match on net as CSU-Pueblo keeper Sam Haseltine saved five.

The Tigers finally play their first home match of the 2015 season on Saturday (Sept. 18) against Lubbock Christian. The match is set for 7 pm at FHSU Soccer Stadium.

Fliers urge Kan. casino backers to voice displeasure with lawsuit

PITTSBURG, Kan. (AP) — Supporters of a stalled southeast Kansas casino are urging backers of the project to attend commission meetings in a county whose lawsuit prompted the delay.

The Kansas Lottery picked Kansas Crossing to run a state-owned casino in Pittsburg in Crawford County. The $70 million project was selected despite being half the size of a $145 million Castle Rock Casino proposal in Cherokee County.

The Joplin Globe reports Cherokee County and Castle Rock sued, causing construction of the Crawford County casino to be temporarily halted.

Kansas Crossing supporters sent fliers to Cherokee County residents urging them to voice their displeasure to county officials for causing local governments to lose $970 a day in gambling revenue.

Cherokee County Commissioner Pat Collins says the commission won’t be swayed by the effort.

Hoyer struggled in his debut before Ryan Mallett took over with about six minutes left and led Houston on two scoring drives to cut the lead to a touchdown.

Kansas governor links merit pay, school aid

JOHN HANNA, AP Political Writer

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Gov. Sam Brownback says work on a new formula for funding Kansas’ public schools should focus on how local districts spend their money, create incentives to shift dollars into classroom instruction and encourage merit pay for teachers.

The Republican governor said during an Associated Press interview that he’d like the GOP-dominated Legislature to draft a new formula next year. It would determine how the state distributes the bulk of its aid the 286 districts, now more than $4 billion.

He said a key issue is making sure that a greater percentage of dollars go to classroom instruction, rather than administrative overhead. And he said a new formula should encourage districts to use merit pay systems to reward their best teachers.

But educators and others say the state’s spending isn’t adequate.

The Wichita 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb was among many across the nation. It was Wichita’s first one.

The Wichita Eagle reports that 200 firefighters from 45 departments mostly in Kansas — but representing at least one from Missouri — made the ascent Saturday at the Epic Center.

Teams of six or so firefighters headed up the stairs at five-minute intervals. They climbed 20 floors five times, riding down the elevator in between before making a final 10-floor ascent.

The World Trade Center had 110 floors.

The Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks killed 343 firefighters. Crews in Wichita wore badges bearing the fallen New York firefighters’ names and photos.
