The Student Government Association of Fort Hays State University conducted its annual safety walk on campus after its meeting on Oct. 15. Members of the SGA, campus police, residential life and FHSU students toured the campus at night in order to point out safety hazards and concerns for students.

“Overall, I believe the walk was very efficient and effective this year,” said SGA vice president Molly Morgan, Wilson senior. “We had a great group of people attend that are dedicated to ensuring that we have a safe campus; therefore, it helped immensely with making sure we stayed focused and kept the walk productive.”

During the fall of 2014, the main focuses of the safety walk were lighting around campus and the effectiveness of emergency call stations. At that time, work orders were placed by SGA.

“We walked around the entire campus and strategically planned our route to focus on the Cunningham Hall and residential life areas,” Morgan said. “That is where most of our concern is going to be throughout the upcoming year because of the construction, the residential life shuttle bus system and the new additions to campus.”

Minor concerns were found that needed fixing at this year’s walk, such as lighting. Work orders were submitted the day after the walk. SGA will follow up to make sure those concerns are addressed.
