WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A man has been charged in the death of a 17-year-old Wichita boy who was shot in the head at a private birthday party.

The Wichita Eagle  reports that 41-year-old Grover James was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

Authorities say Leon McClennon died just before 3 a.m. on May 9 in the basement of Parrot-fa-Nalia Unique Boutique, where about 20 people had gathered for the party. Police say an argument involving two men escalated and one of them pulled out a gun and fired shots, striking McClennon. Authorities say the victim was not involved in the argument.

James is being held in jail on a $500,000 bond. It wasn’t immediately clear if James has an attorney.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Alex Gordon hit a tying home run with one out in the ninth inning, Eric Hosmer hit a sacrifice fly against Bartolo Colon in the 14th and the Kansas City Royals beat the New York Mets 5-4 Tuesday night in the longest opener in World Series history.

Making his Series debut at age 42, Colon escaped a bases-loaded jam in the 12th, then got out of trouble again after allowing a leadoff hit in the 13th.

Alcides Escobar, who hit an inside-the-park home run on Matt Harvey’s first pitch of the night, reached leading off the 14th on an error by third baseman David Wright, who bobbled his grounder and then made a wide throw that pulled Lucas Duda off first base.
Ben Zobrist singled him to third and Lorenzo Cain was intentionally walked, loading the bases. Hosmer flied to right, and Escobar scored standing up ahead of Curtis Granderson’s throw.

Anemic report card for nation’s school kids

schoolJENNIFER C. KERR, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — It’s a not-so rosy report card for the nation’s schoolchildren.

Math scores slipped for fourth and eighth graders over the last two years, and reading grades were not much better — flat for fourth graders and lower for eighth graders. That’s according to the 2015 Nation’s Report Card.

The results of the National Assessment of Educational Progress exam suggest students have a ways to go to demonstrate a solid grasp or mastery in reading and math.

Only about a third of the nation’s eighth-graders were at proficient or above in math and reading. Among fourth graders, the results were slightly better in reading and in math — about two in five scored proficient or above.

The report also found a continuing achievement gap between white and black students.

The Kansas City StarCourt reports that 32-year-old Dustin Adam Maynard pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree murder in the killing of Jordan MacDonald. Prosecutors say MacDonald was stabbed and strangled. Authorities say the victim’s body was found partially burned in a grassy area near Maynard’s apartment on Oct. 30, 2013.

Authorities say the two men had been at a De Soto bar together the night before and that the victim had given Maynard a ride home.

Maynard is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 11.

FHSU volleyball takes both matches in triangular at Northwestern Oklahoma State

FHSU Athletics

ALVA, Okla. – Fort Hays State won both of its matches in a triangular at Northwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday. The Tigers defeated the host Northwestern Oklahoma State 3-0 in their first match of the day, then survived a five-set match with Oklahoma-Panhandle State, 3-2. The Tigers moved to 16-11 overall on the season.

Fort Hays State 3, Northwestern Oklahoma State 0
After the Tigers hit .371 in a conference match with Lindenwood this past Saturday, they followed it with another great offensive effort against Northwestern Oklahoma State in non-conference play. The Tigers hit .360 as a team against the Rangers, cruising to a straight-set win.

The Tigers hit .469 in the first set as they put down 19 kills. After struggling a bit to a .163 hitting percentage and just 14 kills in the second set, FHSU caught fire again in the third and hit .487 with 20 kills. Meanwhile, the Tigers limited the Rangers to a .179 hitting percentage overall.

Crystal Whitten put down a team-best 13 kills and hit .400, while Megan Anderson added 11 kills and hit .625. Mallory Flagor also reached double digits in kills with 10. Sydney Dixon and Rebekah Spainhour each recorded eight kills. Hannah Wagy notched 43 assists and Kailey Klibbe had a team-high 17 digs.

Ashanti Banks led NWOSU (8-14) with eight kills, Kaydee Yukawa had 13 assists, and Carley Geer had 16 digs.

Fort Hays State 3, Oklahoma-Panhandle State 2
Only six days after cruising to a straight-set win in Goodwell, the Tigers found themselves in a match with a struggling Oklahoma-Panhandle State team with just one win on the season. The Tigers were able to escape in five sets, moving to 16-11 overall, while OPSU dropped to 1-25.

The first set looked very similar to the week prior as the Tigers blitzed the Aggies by a score of 25-12. However, the Aggies retaliated with a 28-26 win in the second set to square the match. The Tigers had two set points but could not convert as OPSU rallied for the final three points of the set.

The Tigers took command once again in the third and coasted to a 25-18 win, but then let a five-point lead slip away in the fourth. Up 14-11, the Tigers allowed OPSU to go on an 8-0 run with four straight points in the run coming on service aces by OPSU’s Celci Bakos. OPSU nearly blew several set point opportunities as FHSU rallied for four straight points to make it 24-23, but FHSU committed an error to close the fourth set.

The fifth set was closely contested up to a 9-8 lead by FHSU, but FHSU took six of the final seven points in the set to escape with the win.

Rebekah Spainhour put down a team-best 19 kills and hit .630 in the match with just two errors. Crystal Whitten had 14 kills and Mallry Flagor added 13, while hitting .417. Megan Anderson and Sydney Dixon each had seven kills. Hannah Wagy produced 53 assists, while Kailey Klibbe had a team-high 14 digs.

Father of Kan. man shot by police files federal lawsuit

Wooden gavel from the court placed over a block, isolated on backgroundWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The father of a man who was shot and killed by Wichita police has filed a federal lawsuit against the city and a police officer.

The Wichita Eagle reports the lawsuit, filed Monday in federal court in Wichita, contends city police have a policy of using deadly force even in cases with no immediate threat to officers.

Wichita police say an officer shot 23-year-old John Paul Quintero during a confrontation in early January. Officers were responding to a report of a drunken man allegedly threatening to kill people. Police say Quintero was shot when he refused officers orders to show his hands and reached toward his waistband.

Jennifer Magana, an attorney for the city, said Tuesday the city hasn’t yet been served with the lawsuit.

South American trade buyers visit western Kan. milo crop

Milo GRIGSTON, Kan. (AP) — A group of South American trade buyers have toured Texas and western and central Kansas to learn about the region’s bountiful crop of milo, or grain sorghum.

The Hutchinson News reports the U.S. Grains Council recently showed the six buyers how milo is turned into feed for hogs, food for humans and fuel for vehicles.

The Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service says Kansas farmers planted 3.15 million acres of milo this year, up 17 percent from 2014. Kansas production is forecast at 258 million bushels, up 29 percent from 2014.

Prices of milo have dropped in part because of the larger crop.

Trade buyer Fernan Zapata of Peru says his company, Rico Polla, uses 20,000 tons of feed a month. Zapata says if the prices drop a little bit, Kansas milo will be “more attractive” for his company.
