“Awesome.” That’s how co-director Theresa Hill described last week’s annual fall canned food drive for the Community Assistance Center.

“The top and bottom shelves are also filled (above and below the main shelving.) It hasn’t been that way for awhile,” Hill said with a smile as she pointed out the food items stacked up high and down low.

Hill herself was filled with praise for the Hays High DECA students who coordinated volunteers for the Oct. 6 “Trick or Treat So Others Can Eat” in Hays under the direction of club sponsor Shaina Prough.

“We have more than 10,000 new non-perishable food items and we’re shooting for 15,000,” Hill said.

Volunteers in Victoria will conduct their food drive next Saturday, Oct. 24.

“There were more DECA kids than ever here to help, along with 28 to 30 Hays Lions Club members. Our shelves were bare–it was horrible.”  Hill hopes the spring food drive by mail carriers will do as well.  “We need it.”

cac bottom shelfEllis County residents may still donate non-perishable food items to the CAC, 208 E. 12th in Hays, to be included in the fall drive.

“We’ll keep track of it through the end of October,” Hill said.

The CAC is now open longer hours, from 7:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Jinx? Texas governor congratulates Astros before collapse vs Royals

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Here’s a new “oops” moment for a Texas governor: prematurely celebrating a Houston Astros playoff victory.

With Houston up four runs and six outs away Monday from finishing off Kansas City, the office of Republican Gov. Greg Abbott tweeted congratulations to the Astros for advancing to the AL Championship Series. The Royals then rallied in the eighth inning and forced a decisive Game 5 with a 9-6 victory.

The tweet has since been deleted.

Abbott, who is an avid Twitter user, responded to the gaffe by telling Astros fans to unfollow his office and stick to his personal Twitter account. He tweeted: “No predictions. Just support.”

Abbott spokesman John Wittman said the deleted tweet was sent by a staffer and declined further comment.

Game 5 is Wednesday at Kansas City.

Chiefs RB Charles done for season with knee injury

By DAVE SKRETTA
AP Sports Writer

ChiefsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL in his right knee.

The star running back hurt his knee in the third quarter of Sunday’s loss to Chicago. An MRI on Monday confirmed the tear.

Earlier Monday, coach Andy Reid said “the worst case is the ACL is torn. That’s probably the direction it’s heading.”

Charles was making a cut deep in Bears territory on Sunday when his right knee buckled at a gruesome angle. The four-time Pro Bowl selection needed help from a trainer and linebacker Justin Houston to get off the field, never once putting any weight on the leg.

Charles tore the ACL in his other knee four years ago, missing most of the season.

How cyber security-savvy are you?

Ken Selzer, Kansas Insurance Commissioner
Ken Selzer, Kansas Insurance Commissioner

Ken Selzer, Kansas Commissioner of Insurance

Consider this: You receive an email, tweet or post with a link that looks suspicious. Do you delete it or open it?

If you are following the guidelines promoted by the backers of October’s National Cyber Security Awareness Month, you won’t be tempted to open it.

October has been designated by the federal government as a time when Kansans and other United States citizens are asked to raise their awareness about how secure your electronic communications are, according to Ken Selzer, CPA, Kansas Commissioner of Insurance.

“Cyber security is something everyone needs to practice,” Commissioner Selzer said. “We need to be vigilant in making sure our personal information is kept secure. Kansas consumers should always be aware of activity on their financial accounts and insurance transactions and let their institutions know if something appears suspicious.”

The Department of Homeland Security and others have suggested the following guidelines:
• Set strong passwords and don’t share them with anyone. Set them with at least eight characters, including letters, numbers and symbols.
• Keep your operating system, browser, and other critical software optimized by installing updates.
• Maintain an open dialogue with your family, friends, and community about Internet safety.
• Limit the amount of personal information you post online, and use privacy settings to avoid sharing information widely.
• Be cautious about what you receive or read online—if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Also, if a message sounds out of character for the sender, or includes nothing but a link in the body of the email, it may be suspicious. Check with the person who purportedly sent you the message to make sure it is legitimate.
• Limit the type of business you conduct on public Wi-Fi networks.

“While corporations throughout the country continue to combat data breaches and sophisticated hacks of their information—in many cases, potentially your information—it is important that cyber vigilance begins at home,” Commissioner Selzer said.

State capital deals with increasing number of unsafe homes

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Topeka is expected to quadruple its annual budget to demolish unsafe homes.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports Topeka demolishes about 11 homes a year after the structures are declared unsafe. But the city expects that total to rise next year to about 44 homes.

Richard Faulkner, the city’s division director of property code and development, says the city will quadruple its annual budget from $100,000 to $400,000 to demolish those homes.

He says a recent survey identified 700 vacant houses in Topeka, and residents have expressed concerns about those structures.

The city is also trying to address problems involving vacant homes. Next year’s budget also provides funding for the neighborhood services department to increase its number of code enforcement inspectors to 10 from eight.

Kansas reviewing expensive legislative software contract

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas officials are reviewing a contract with an Irish software company hired to build custom legislative software that some lawmakers say has been problematic.

The Wichita Eagle reports  Kansas has paid Dublin-based Propylon $15.8 million since 2005 to build software and provide technical support for the Legislative Information Systems and Services.

Legislative leaders have held off renewing the contract until the firm addresses problems with the software. Senate President Susan Wagle has said glitches in the software often forced staff members to work late during the 2015 session and delayed votes.

Propylon CEO John Harrington says crews are putting plans in place to address the requests from state staff.

House Speaker Ray Merrick says he’s pleased with progress so far in the state’s discussions with Propylon about addressing issues.
