One of the newer dining establishments in Hays, On the Rocks Bar and Grill, 507 W. Seventh, is offering a pretty sweet deal to area residents with the intention of spreading acts of kindness.

The offer was posted on the establishment’s Facebook page Tuesday morning. on the rocks logo

“I want to try a little experiment with all of you,” said Tony Taylor, owner. “Without being too political, I tend to believe that we can get caught in the rat race and lose sight of what really matters, our fellow man.”

The intention to focus on others sparked the idea at the establishment, that carries few rules, instead focusing on positive community interactions.

“I will offer anyone a free meal (excluding beverages or alcohol) every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. if that person in the previous week, Monday through Saturday, does something nice for anyone or organization in the community,” Taylor said.

“Something nice” for the offer covers a wide array of activities.

“You could pick up trash, donate money to animal rescue, mow someone’s lawn for free, carry someone’s groceries, donate time anywhere, compliment five random strangers, basically anything that can change or impact anyone for even one second,” he said.

Participants will document the activity on the establishment’s Facebook page in order to track the good deeds.

“All you have to do is take a picture or write a short description of what you did and where and post it on this page. I will keep track of your name and look for you the following Sunday. I will take care of your meal and all you have to do is take care of any beverages you order, my servers and enjoy the meal you earned,” Taylor said.

KFIX Rock News: John Fogerty Releases Memoir

fogertybook_2NEW YORK (AP) – John Fogerty believes he was such a prolific songwriter because he was born at the right time.

Fogerty says he was a child of the 1960s and his music was part of the soundtrack of that era.

He says everything was in turmoil and it was a fascinating time unlike any other — although he points out he was not alive when the Black Plague was hitting Europe.

He says that was “probably pretty exciting” as well.

Fogerty writes about his life in his new book, “Fortunate Son: My Life, My Music,” in stores today.

Kan. challenging same-sex couples’ request for birth certificates

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Two same-sex couples say Kansas has refused to issue birth certificates listing them as parents of their children conceived through artificial insemination.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports the women contend the state is refusing to comply with a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that said states must give full recognition to same-sex marriages.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas filed affidavits Monday from women who said the state was not granting issuing birth certificates listing both women in their marriages as parents of children conceived through artificial insemination.

The ACLU also filed a federal lawsuit in 2014 seeking to end Kansas’ ban on same-sex marriage. That case was pending when the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its landmark decision in June.

KDHE says it’s still studying the case.

Death of firefighters leads to consolidation of Ellis Co. fire districts

By JONATHAN ZWEYGARDT
Hays Post

Ellis County will move forward with merging two rural fire districts after receiving very little input from the community.

Ellis County Rural Fire Chief Darin Myers said at Monday’s Ellis County Commission meeting he had not received any phone calls regarding a proposal he presented to the commission last month that would combine Rural Fire Companies 2 and 3 in northwest Ellis County at Catharine and Companies 6 and 7 in the southwest part of the county at Ellis.

Myers said when talking to the public in those areas, most did not know there were still fire companies in those locations.

Among the reasons for the consolidations is a shortage of firefighters, Myers said. As of this week, Company 3, located on the Saline River Road, no longer has any volunteer firefighters. He said the three remaining firefighters said they would retire along with former Chief Dick Klaus — and that happened this week.

The county commission is expected to adopt an updated resolution at next week’s meeting.

In other business, the commission:

• Approved an agreement with P&W Commercial Investments for $136,900 for the purchase of the rural fire property at 1208 Cedar Street.

• Approved, as the Public Building Commission a bid from Nex-Tech for $86,218.62 for cabling, security cameras and equipment at the courthouse and Law Enforcement Center.

• Heard from Commissioner Dean Haselhorst, who said construction at the Emergency Services Building is 99 percent complete. Haselhorst said the generator installed at the EMS building is too small. He said it should have been a 200- or 250-kilowatt generator — instead a 150-KW generator was installed. Officials plan to address the issue this week.

• Gave the Emergency Management Director authority to purchase a new 2014 E350 Van for $29,764.95.
