FHSU women’s soccer knocks off No. 1 Central Missouri

FHSU Athletics

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State handed Central Missouri its first loss of the season on Sunday at FHSU Soccer Stadium. The Tigers knocked off the No. 1 ranked team in the nation by a score of 2-1, moving to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in the MIAA.

The Tigers and Jennies (9-1, 3-1 MIAA) went scoreless through the first half, but Kelsey Steffens quickly threw momentum in Fort Hays State’s favor with a goal just 2:41 into the second half in the 48th minute. She buried a shot from the top of the box in the low left corner after taking a pass from Gabrielle Makatura.

Central Missouri, which averaged better than four goals per match entering Sunday, went scoreless until a defensive breakdown by the Tigers in the box at 69:32. Megan Woolley took advantage of an open net after the Tigers couldn’t corral a ball from Abby Rhodes, tying the match 1-1.

The Tigers were not deterred by the UCM goal as Savannah McClease put an excellent strike on the ball just over two minutes later off a blocked shot from the foot of Veronica Kurtz. The ball ricocheted up off the fingertips of the keeper, off the cross bar, and off the back side of the keeper, falling across the line into the net.

The Tiger defense closed the deal the rest of the way, giving FHSU one of its biggest wins in program history. UCM took 16 shots in the game, but only five were on goal. FHSU had just eight shots, but two of the four on goal found the net.

Kristin Thompson had four saves to move to 5-3 at goalkeeper this season. Ana Dilkes took her first loss of the season, now 9-1, with just two saves.

The Tigers will take a three-match win streak to Northeastern State next Friday. Match time is set for 7 pm in Tahlequah, Okla.

Missed opportunities cost No. 22 FHSU men’s soccer

FHSU Athletics

HAYS, Kan. – The 22nd-ranked Fort Hays State men’s soccer team took their first loss in the MIAA and third loss overall on Sunday, falling to conference rival Northeastern State 1-0. The RiverHawks, which received votes in the latest NSCAA Poll, moved to 6-4 overall, 2-1 in the MIAA, while the Tigers are now 7-3 overall, 1-1 in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State’s biggest opportunity occurred in the 17th minute when Mauricio Castorino struck a shot that hit the post. With the goalkeeper out of place, Anthony Hernandez had plenty of daylight to bury a shot in the box, but an NSU defender perfectly placed himself on the goal line, sacrificing his body in front of a rocket strike by Hernandez to keep the match scoreless.

Neither team had many other offensive opportunities before halftime, FHSU with five shots and NSU with four, leaving the game scoreless.

Not long into the second half, Northeastern State’s Paul Samia had a fortunate stroke of luck. From 35 yards out on a free kick, Samia placed a nice ball deep into the box intended for a striker. The striker completely missed the ball, but with goalkeeper Michael Yantz expecting a shot, the free kick found its way into the net. That put NSU up 1-0 in the 51st minute.

The Tiger offense perked up in the second half registering 10 shots, but none found the net which left the score 1-0 in favor of the RiverHawks when the final horn sounded. The match was tightly contested as usual between the two squads, 15 total shots for each team. Eric Shephard moved to 6-4 on the season in goal for NSU, while Yantz dropped to 7-3 for FHSU. Each keeper had three saves in the match.

The Tigers look to rebound in their next match as they head to Fayette, Iowa on Thursday for another MIAA match against Upper Iowa.

RUSSELL–Area residents are invited to attend the opening of ‘Prairie Structures: Natural or Man-made,’ the newest exhibit at the Deines Cultural Center. An reception will be held Sat., Oct. 10, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Inspired by the Main Streets of Kansas, award-winning Topeka artist Becky Drager creates lively, historic downtown scenes.

“These paintings are meant to inspire the viewer to see the ordinary in a new way and what we take for granted, by bringing them into the foreground of our lives,” Drager said in a news release. “Using super-saturated colors and a modern graphic look, I make the native limestone, brick, metal or animals pop with energizing life by injecting the painting with inspirational color that enhances the beauty of the object whether it is natural or man-made,” Drager added.

Becky’s husband, musician Kirk Drager will be performing live during the reception. “It’s sure to be a great evening of art and music,” said Shannon Trevethan, DCC director.

‘Prairie Structures: Natural or Man-made’ will be on display from Saturday, October 10 through Friday, November 13, 2015.

Perez hit his 21st homer in the third inning, one behind Kendrys Morales and Mike Moustakas for the team lead.

Cueto (4-7 with Royals, 11-13 overall) allowed one run over five innings, helping the Royals finish on a five-game winning streak.

The right-hander, whose transition to the AL since a trade from Cincinnati has hardly been smooth, surrendered six hits and four walks. Cueto struck out the last two batters to leave the bases loaded in the fourth after giving up an RBI single to Danny Santana.

The defending AL champion Royals (95-67) posted their best regular-season record since the 1980 team went 97-65.

Ricky Nolasco (5-2) started for the Twins for the first time since May 31 and lasted only 2 2-3 innings.

Kansas Democratic Party elects new chairman

SALINA, Kan. (AP) — A Wichita attorney is the new Kansas Democratic Party chairman after delegates from across the state elected him on a unanimous vote.

Lee Kinch is a longtime party activist who will replace Larry Meeker, who resigned as party chairman in August after he was quoted saying the Kansas party needed to emphasize it is more conservative than many nationally known Democrats.

The Salina Journal (http://bit.ly/1KZAoID ) reports Kinch on Saturday pledged to bring the party together and work to gain seats next year in the Legislature with the help of moderate Republicans.

Jim Sherow, who ran against Republican incumbent 1st District Congressman Tim Huelskamp last year, says he was first nominated but turned it down so he could support Kinch.

KC Chiefs LogoCINCINNATI (AP) — Andy Dalton added to his streak of impressive game and big plays, throwing a 55-yard touchdown pass on the run, and the Cincinnati Bengals stayed unbeaten with a 36-21 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

The Bengals (4-0) matched the third-best start in franchise history, two wins shy of the club record.

Dalton has been the thread throughout the wins, ascending to the top of the AFC passer list. He had another spot-on day, completing 17 of 24 for 321 yards with the long touchdown pass to Brandon Tate during a scramble.

It was another rough day all around for Kansas City (1-3). Alex Smith was sacked five times, the Chiefs settled for Cairo Santos’ club-record seven field goals, and the defense couldn’t keep up with another one of the NFL’s top passers.

Dump truck driver found dead in Kan. field after reported missing

Tough voter ID rules pull Kansas into multiple lawsuits

VoteJOHN HANNA, AP Political Writer

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Secretary of State Kris Kobach’s successful push to require new Kansas voters to document their U.S. citizenship has spawned three lawsuits, including one from him.

Kansas is one of only four states with a proof-of-citizenship law. Its statute took effect in 2013.

Kobach has directed county election officials to cancel more than 31,000 incomplete registrations. Most are from people who’ve failed to document their citizenship.

Democratic attorneys filed a federal lawsuit last week against the conservative Republican secretary of state. The American Civil Liberties Union has pursued its own lawsuit in a state court for nearly two years.

Kobach and Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett also filed their own federal lawsuit in 2013 in a failed effort to force the federal government to help their states enforce proof-of-citizenship requirements.
