US issues travel warning for Americans

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 5.36.38 AMWASHINGTON (AP) — The State Department is alerting Americans to the possible risks of travel due to increased terrorist threats around the world.

A travel alert issued on Monday says current information suggests that Islamic State militants, al-Qaida, Boko Haram and other terrorist groups continue to plan attacks in multiple regions. U.S. authorities say the likelihood of terror attacks will continue as members of IS return from Syria and Iraq, and others not affiliated with terror groups engage in violence on their own.

Extremists have attacked in France, Nigeria, Denmark, Turkey and Mali and IS has claimed responsibility for bombing a Russian airliner in Egypt.

U.S. citizens are advised to be vigilant in public places and on transportation and avoid large crowds, including holiday events or festivals.

Poor equipment, weather to blame for fatal Kan. plane crash

NTSBDERBY, Kan. (AP) — A new report says a plane crash that killed a California traveling pastor and his longtime pilot in 2013 near Derby was the result of the pilot attempting to navigate icy conditions with malfunctioning controls.

The National Transportation Safety Board report also says 49-year-old pilot Mitchell Morgan had reported problematic equipment to maintenance in another state after arriving in Wichita. Personnel replaced one of the faulty instruments before the flight, but no other work was performed on it at the time.

The report says Morgan likely became disoriented as he attempted to maneuver and maintain control after an air traffic controller gave him altered flight instructions.

The Wichita Eagle reports that the crash killed Morgan and 72-year-old Ed Dufresne, who was a pastor in Murrieta, California.

No. 5 Kansas crushes Chaminade in Maui Invitational

By JIM O’CONNELL

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) – Wayne Selden Jr. and Sviatoslav Mykhaliuk both scored 18 points to lead seven Kansas players in double figures and the fifth-ranked Jayhawks cruised past Chaminade 123-72 in the opening round of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational on Monday night.

Devonte Graham had 15 points, Frank Mason III had 14, Landen Lucas had 13 and Hunter Mickelson and Perry Ellis both had 11 for the Jayhawks, who shot 64.4 percent from the field (47 for 73).

Kansas (2-1) will play UCLA game in the semifinals on Tuesday after the Bruins edged UNLV 77-75 in Monday’s final game. The Jayhawks bounced back from a 79-73 loss to then-No. 13 Michigan State last week in the Champions Classic.

Chaminade (0-3), the Division II host school from Honolulu, dropped to 7-85 in the 32 years of the tournament. The only way to an upset was to beat Kansas from the outside and the Silverswords took almost as many 3-point field goals (33) than 2-point shots (36).

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Wichita Municipal Court is offering an amnesty program next month for drivers whose licenses have been suspended for failing to pay or go to court for a traffic citation.

The Wichita Eagle reports the program will run from Dec. 4 to Dec. 30, during which fees and traffic-related warrants will be waived. Applicants who can’t afford to pay the fines and court costs can receive credit toward their fines by performing community service with local organizations or attend training offered by Workforce Alliance.

State Sen. Michael O’Donnell, a Wichita Republican, says the pilot program is being watched closely at the state level. If it’s successful, he says legislation will be intruduced in the next session allowing for the waiver of city and state fees.

HAYS, Kan. — It’s been a long time since the Fort Hays State University football team has qualified for the post-season, and fans are making plans to follow the Tigers in their first post-season action since 1995.

The Alumni Association is sponsoring a tailgate party before the Dec. 5 Mineral Water Bowl in Excelsior Springs, Mo., where the Tigers should feel welcome. The stadium that is home to the Excelsior Springs High School Tigers bears the same name of the FHSU mascot. The tailgate party for FHSU Tiger fans will take place in the parking lot on the west side of Tiger Stadium. Several FHSU students also will be in attendance at that event after boarding buses on campus en route to Missouri the morning of the game.

The Tigers, 8-3, were invited to participate in the bowl game as the highest finishing Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association team that didn’t qualify for the NCAA Division II playoffs. The noon game will pit Fort Hays State vs. the University of Minnesota-Duluth (also 8-3) from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

FHSU already has tied the school record for most victories in a season, and plans are under way for fans to watch the Tigers try to break that record.

Information on purchasing tickets can be found online at www.fhsu.edu/bowlbound or by calling the FHSU Athletic Department at (785) 628-4050.

There are additional participation opportunities for two special groups of fans.

From the Alumni Association:
Tickets for the 10 a.m. tailgate party, which includes a chicken-dinner meal, are $6 for adults and $4 for children 10 and under. A combo package of the tailgate meal and the game is available for $16 for adults and $14 for children 10 and under. Game tickets only are $10.

A $1 processing fee is added to all game tickets purchased through the Alumni Association. Tickets will be available for pick-up at the tailgate registration table. Online registration for all these events is available at https://ow.ly/UZLgL (case sensitive).

There will also be an informal alumni and friends gathering in Excelsior Springs the night before the game, from 7 to 9 p.m.Dec. 4 at the Broadway Bar & Grill, 259 E. Broadway St. The bar and grill will serve as “Tiger headquarters” for those interested in socializing following the banquet. More information about the game and Friday’s banquet can be found atwww.fhsu.edu/bowlbound.

From Residential Life:
The FHSU Residence Hall Association and FHSU Residential Life are sending a busload of students to Excelsior Springs. The bus will leave at 5:30 a.m. the day of the game from McMindes Hall and plans to return to Hays at approximately 8 p.m.

Students are required to purchase their own game tickets from the FHSU athletic office by calling  785-628-4050. The tailgate meal is free to students riding the bus. Kansas State blows out Missouri in CBE Classic semis

By DAVE SKRETTA
AP Sports Writer

Kansas_State_Wildcats7-342x250KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Dean Wade had 14 points and 13 rebounds in his fourth college game, and Kansas State’s zone defense forced Missouri into an atrocious shooting night in a 66-42 rout in the semifinals of the CBE Classic on Monday night.

Justin Edwards added 13 points and Wesley Iwundu had 10 for the Wildcats (4-0), who will play ninth-ranked North Carolina or Northwestern for the tournament championship Tuesday night.

Kevin Puryear led the Tigers (2-2) with nine points, but the freshman forward didn’t get much help. The Tigers shot just 31 percent from the field while getting dominated on the glass by their former Big 12 rival, who won for the fifth time in their last six meetings.

The game was mostly decided in the first 20 minutes, when Kansas State kept packing into a zone defense and the Tigers were unable to shoot their way over top of it.

The Wildcats will face the winner between North Carolina and Northwestern in Tuesday night’s final.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Former President Bill Clinton is the latest recipient of a prize named after the man he defeated in the 1996 election.

Clinton was at the University of Kansas Monday to receive the Dole Leadership Prize, named in honor of the longtime Republican senator from Kansas. Dole was the 1996 GOP presidential nominee who lost when the Democrat Clinton was re-elected.

The award is granted by the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics at the university.
