Some Kansas inmates get checked less amid low staffing

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The frequency of inmate checks at the Sedgwick County Jail in Wichita has decreased amid low staffing levels and a policy change.

The Wichita Eagle reports previous jail policies called for what are referred to as “physical rounds” to be conducted every 30 minutes. According to the sheriff’s office, the checks require a deputy to visually check an inmate to ensure that the inmate is doing well.

The new policy says inmate checks should be reasonably spaced throughout a deputy’s shift and not more than two hours apart in maximum-security areas. Due to a lack of staff members, Sheriff Jeff Easter has said that increasing rounds is virtually impossible.

Easter said in October that jail staffing was down to 67 from a full staff of about 300.

KFIX Rock News: Jeff Lynne’s ELO Releases New Song Online

jlelo_greyJeff Lynne recently relaunched his old band Electric Light Orchestra under the name Jeff Lynne’s ELO, and on November 13, they’ll release Alone in the Universe, ELO’s first album of new original songs in almost 15 years.

Now, one of those new tunes, “One Step at a Time,” has gotten its exclusive premiere at EW.com.

The track features modern electronic beats during the verse before moving into a dance-able melodic chorus reminiscent of many of ELO’s 1970s hits.

“I didn’t have quite enough up-tempo [songs],” Lynne tells Entertainment Weekly with regard to writing “One Step at a Time.”  “It’s got some very intricate chords in the verse, which I like a lot, because it’s sort of old-fashioned music but with a regular rock and roll beat.”

Alone in the Universe is an apt name for the album, since Lynne wrote all the songs and played all the instruments on the record.  As for his decision to revive the ELO moniker, Jeff points out, “I wrote every song that that name has ever done.  I think it’s a shame to throw it away, because it is my legacy.”

Lynne explains his approach to composing the material on Alone in the Universe was influenced by his 2012 solo album, Long Wave, a collection of standards, show tunes, early rock ‘n’ roll songs and other cover tunes that inspired his own music.

“I learned how those old masters used to write those songs, because I learned every part on every instrument to make the record,” says Jeff.  “It taught me different ways of reaching the same place but going a different route.”

He adds, “The whole album represents these new chords and just the thrill of it.  I know [how] to get a sound exactly as I want it, and I know which way to get it.”

Earlier this week, Lynne debuted the official video for another track from Alone in the Universe, “When I Was a Boy.”  You can watch the clip online at the official ELO VEVO channel.

Candidate would be Kansas’ first transgender House member

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — If she’s selected by a small group of Topeka Democrats to replace a retiring member of the state House of Representatives, Stephanie Mott would be the first transgender member of the Kansas Legislature.

Mott, who’s 57, began living as a woman full time in 2007 and has since become one of the state’s leading advocates for transgender rights.

The Wichita Eagle reports Mott wants to be the replacement for Rep. Harold Lane, a Topeka Democrat who announced his retirement in October.

Mott faces competition for the House post from Carolyn Wims-Campbell, the first African-American to serve on the Kansas Board of Education. Wims-Campbell, an executive member of the Topeka chapter of the NAACP, previously served on the Topeka school board.

The committee will vote on Lane’s replacement Nov. 14.

MOVIE REVIEW: ‘Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse’ doesn’t earn any merit badges

James Gerstner reviews movies for Hays Post.
James Gerstner reviews movies for Hays Post.

“Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse” a strange fish that blends irreverent humor, zombies and a lame coming of age story into a mostly unsuccessful horror comedy. The genre of horror comedy, by its nature, doesn’t take itself very seriously, which is a good thing.

When “Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (which I’m already tired of typing), tries to perform real character development, or when it tries to justify its lame jokes, it slips beneath the waves and starts to drown in its own nonsense. On the other hand, when it is just having fun with, and I’m not joking here, zombie strippers or weaponized weed whackers, it has marginally more success.

This film suffers from whatever the opposite of the Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks power team is – it’s helmed by a bunch of rookies with less-than-stellar credits. Director Christopher Landon’s most recognizable credit is serving as the screenwriter for five different “Paranormal Activity” movies.

scouts-guide-to-the-zombie-apocalypse-poster

To be honest, I haven’t seen any of the “Paranormal Activity” movies, but I’m surprised to learn that they have scripts. One of the writers previous working credit, according to IMDB.com, is a laughable attempt called “College Road Trip” staring Martin Lawrence and Raven-Symoné from back in 2008, which unsurprisingly received a 13% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The results are lackluster, at best. There are a few laughs, but they are hard won and often forced. This very much isn’t a movie for the kiddos, and in almost every case, isn’t a movie for adults either. It’s very hard to recommend outside of an eventual viewing on “bad movie night.”

City of Hays

The fifth day of the annual alley cleanup in Hays has been completed–the first full week.

The 2015 Annual Alley Cleanup will consist of one and only one sweep through the City which started Monday, Oct. 26.

No set schedule has been established; however, residential curbside services will be first with residential regular alley services following. The city wide general schedule for alley services will start after curbside collections are completed. The number of employees committed to the task may vary from day to day; therefore, crews are unable to predict when they will be by a residence. City crews have a time limit per residence.

As in years past, the City WILL NOT pick up tires and hazardous waste. Tires should be disposed of at the Ellis County Landfill, and hazardous waste items should be disposed of at the Ellis County Hazardous Waste Facility. Please call 628-9460 or 628-9449 for detailed information.

The Annual Alley Cleanup Program is an opportunity for residents to discard items that would not be picked up in normal trash collection.

Waste should be placed in four separate piles in preparation of the Alley Cleanup. The piles should be organized in the following manner:

1. Tree limbs and brush (no longer than 12 feet in length or 6 inches in diameter), all yard and garden waste MUST be bagged

2. Construction and Demolition Debris, i.e., lumber, drywall, bricks, sinks, wires, etc. (please pull or bend over nails and place small quantities of concrete, bricks, and plaster in containers)

3. White Goods/Metals, i.e., guttering, siding, washing machines, dryers, refrigerators, metal swing sets, etc.

4. Municipal Waste (all other items), i.e., furniture, carpet, tv’s, computers, etc.

**TO AVOID WRONGFUL PICK UP, “TREASURED ITEMS” SHOULD BE TAGGED OR REMOVED FROM THE COLLECTION AREA**

Help make the City of Hays alleys clean and safe for all.

Alley cleanup is for City of Hays residential customers paying for refuse services.

TREE LIMB DISPOSAL REMINDER
Free disposal of tree limbs is available for City of Hays residents at the Ellis County Transfer Station, 1515 W 55th, Monday to Saturday – 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
