Tiger women overcome poor shooting to rally past Washburn

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State outscored Washburn 17-4 over the final 7:23 as they rally for a 62-54 win Wednesday night in the MIAA opener for both. The Tigers used superb defense to overcome a poor shooting night to start the season 7-0. The Tigers forced 26 turnovers and outscored the Ichabods 23-2 off of turnovers.

Down 10 early in the third quarter, the Tigers used an 11-2 run to pull within one on a Beth Bohuslavsky three-point play. The Ichabods led by five with 7:23 to play but were held to just four points the rest of the way as they fall to 4-3.

Chelsea Mason, who missed her first six 3-point tries, hit a runner from the left baseline to give FHSU the lead for good with 2:15 to play.

The Tigers hit just two of their first 15 shots to open the game but only trialed by one after the first quarter. They started 0-for-11 from the floor to start the second quarter and fell behind by 11 before closing on a 7-0 run to pull within 28-24 at the half.

Bohuslavsky led Fort Hays State with 17 points. Mason scored 12 and Paige Lunsford added 11.

Washburn was led by Erika Lane and Jayna Smith who both scored 13.
