Boys: Manhattan 69, TMP 53
TMP trailed by only six points, 31-25, at halftime against 6A Manhattan but were outscored 19-9 in the third quarter and couldn’t mount a comeback in the fourth. The Monarchs took an early 2-0 out of the gate on a Peyton Hoffman layup and would not lead again the rest of the game. TMP was tied at the end of the first quarter, 11-11, and trailed by as many as eight in the second quarter when sophomore Michael Lager hit a buzzer beating put back to end the half.
Manhattan pulled away in the third quarter and led by as many as 21 in the fourth quarter. TMP was led by 23 points from senior Jared Vitztum. The Monarchs will take on Newton in the consolation semi-final matchup at 4:45 on Friday afternoon at Hays Middle School.
Girls: Manhattan 56, TMP 47
Rose McFarland’s TMP Lady Monarchs fought valiantly on Thursday night in the opening round of the Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout in a losing effort, 56-47. TMP took an early 9-5 lead before Manhattan stormed back with an eight-nothing run to end the quarter. The Lady Monarchs would score the first six points of the second quarter to take their last lead of the game,15-13.
Manhattan slowly pulled away in the third quarter, leading 38-31 heading to the fourth. The Lady Indians would build their lead to 11 midway through the fourth quarter before TMP made a charge. The Lady Monarchs cut the lead to two at 47-45 but would not get any closer. Kayla Vitztum led three Lady Monarchs in double figures with 13 points followed by Melissa Pfeifer with 12 and Katelyn Zimmerman with 11. TMP will take on Garden City in the consolation semi-finals at 3 0’clock on Friday afternoon at Hays Middle School
