Ellis County won’t allow salvaging at landfill

Ellis County will not allow salvaging at the landfill due to safety concerns. At a meeting earlier this year, a member of the public asked the Ellis County Commission to look into allowing salvaging at the landfill.

Interim Public Works Director Curt Hoffman said the county’s insurance provider strongly discouraged the county from allowing people to search through and purchase items they find of use at the landfill.

Hoffman said it isn’t safe for people to be walking around when the large equipment is in use.

“If we’re allowed to let people loiter out there, the next thing you know, they’re going to be in the way and somebody’s going to back up and somebody’s going to get hurt,” Hoffman said.

The county will post signs prohibiting people from attempting to salvage at the landfill.
