Mid-afternoon Tuesday, an email alert was sent from the Hays USD 489 administration warning of someone trying to sell movie discount cards at schools through the district.
The original warning came from Sarah Wasinger, USD 489 information officer.
“A gentleman selling movie cards and discounts went to Wilson and the Middle School today saying our office approved him to visit and sell has cards at the school. We did not give anyone approval to do this. If he comes to your building, please ask him to leave. We believe what he is peddling is more than likely a scam,” she said in the email.
Corporate officials from the local theater confirmed the cards would not be accepted locally.
“He was just trying to sell coupons for discounts for movies, popcorn and stuff,” Wasinger said.
Wasinger said he was trying to sell to teachers, not students in the schools, and indicated there was no threat to students or staff.
