KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A 45-year-old man has been charged in the shooting death of another man in Kansas City, Kansas.
Franklin Bryant Jr. of Kansas City, Kansas, was charged in Wyandotte County with second-degree murder in Tuesday’s killing of Jerome Simmons. Bryant is jailed on $250,000 bond. It wasn’t immediately known if he had an attorney.
The prosecutor’s office said in a news release that the investigation into the killing is ongoing.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A new elementary school named after President Dwight D. Eisenhower has opened in his boyhood home of Abilene, Kansas, 46 years after he left office.
Parents considered Eisenhower as a name for an Abilene elementary school in the 1960s. But it wasn’t until Thursday that fourth- and fifth-grade students began classes in a building bearing the name of the 34th president and supreme Allied commander during World War II.
The school that some parents wanted to name Eisenhower decades earlier was ultimately named after President John Kennedy based on a tradition of naming district schools after assassinated presidents. The district hadn’t built a new elementary school since then.
SOUTH HUTCHINSON– Law enforcement authorities in Reno County are investigating a “White Van Scam.”
The victim, according to police media release, was pressured into buying a home surround system that was priced at over $2700.
The victim paid much less for the item in cash and later realized he had been scammed.
When the victim took a speaker apart, it was full of concrete.
All items in the box were heavy as if full of concrete.
The suspect’s vehicle was described as a newer white Chevrolet SUV with at least two white male occupants.
One had a longer beard and the second was clean shaven. The victim also stated there were multiple boxes with electronics in the back of the SUV.

BUTLER COUNTY – Two people were injured in an accident just after 7a.m. on Saturday in Butler County.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1988 Chevy pickup driven by Mac C. Masterson, 74, El Dorado, was westbound on U.S. 54 two miles east of El Dorado.
The pickup struck the side of the cab of a semi that was pulling out of a private drive onto U.S. 54.
Masterson and the semi driver Levy John Gordanier, 44, Escanaba, MI., were transported to Susan B. Allen Hospital.
Masterson was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.
Office of U.S. Senator Jerry Moran
U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) has announced he will visit Oakley and Grainfield as part of his Kansas Listening Tour on Monday, Jan. 18.
Area residents are encouraged to attend and share feedback with Sen. Moran on the critical issues facing Kansas and the nation. The issues Sen. Moran focuses on and the work he does in Washington, D.C., are significantly based on the conversations he has with Kansans during these town hall meetings.
Moran will be in Oakley from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at the Logan County Courthouse, 710 W. 2nd Street, in the basement meeting room. The senator will then travel to Gove County for another town hall meeting. It will be held from 9 until 10 a.m. in the Grainfield American Legion, 235 Main Street.

While many were traveling to visit family over the holiday break, art and design professor Linda Ganstrom was delivering the White Queen, the Red Queen and Alice to Columbus, Ohio.
The three figures are part of a piece titled “Through the Looking Glass Ceiling: The Red Queen, The White Queen and Alice,” which will be featured in “Equality,” an exhibit at the Ohio Craft Museum.
Ganstrom is known for her figurative ceramic works, which combine clay and textiles into lifelike women wearing dramatic dresses.
Ganstrom’s involvement in this show stemmed from her membership in Women Ceramics Sculptors – a group of women who support each other by looking for exhibition opportunities and proposing them to museums.
“Equality” was organized by fellow Women Ceramics Sculptors member Janis Mars Wunderlich, who currently teaches ceramic art classes at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio. The exhibition explores equality both in the workplace and in life.
When discussing her inspiration for these pieces, Ganstrom references the novel “Through the Looking Glass” by Lewis Carroll.
“I was looking at ‘Through the Looking Glass,’ which is the follow up book to ‘Alice in Wonderland,'” Ganstrom said.
“The Red Queen is very tempestuous and angry – not what we’d consider a great role model. The White Queen is very beautiful, but also very cold. Alice is looking to see what she can take from each one.”

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A top Army official says the latest delay in opening the new hospital at Fort Riley is attributed to 357 safety issues.
Assistant Secretary of the Army Katherine Hammack told U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran in a letter obtained by The Associated Press that the problems were identified during pre-final inspections. They include things like fire doors not meeting code requirements.
The project was initially fast-tracked for completion in 2012 but has run into numerous delays.
Hammack assured the Kansas senator that the contractor is actively working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to resolve the issues as early as possible.
Hospital commander Col. Risa Ware says staff is training in the facility and 90 percent of the furniture and equipment has arrived.
GARDEN CITY – Law enforcement authorities in Finney and Sedgwick Counties are investigating a case of child pornography.
Police in Wichita on Friday arrested Steve Thompson, 62, in connection with an investigation in Garden City, according to a media release.
In September of 2013 an investigation was initiated after apparent child pornography was located on Thompson’s work computer on the campus of the Garden City Community College.
Throughout the course of the investigation multiple search warrants were served on Thompson’s residence, vehicles, and computer equipment.
Forensic examinations of multiple computers and media storage devices led to the discovery of images relating to child pornography.
On Thursday, an arrest warrant was obtained and sent to the Wichita Police Department in an attempt to locate Thompson who now resides in Wichita and works as a teacher at Northeast Magnet High School.
He is being held at the Sedgwick County Jail and could face the possible charges of Sexual Exploitation of a Child.
The Finney County Attorney’s Office is expected to released additional details next week.
