HACC will offer free developmental screenings

HACC_LogoHays Area Children’s Center, in cooperation with Hays Interagency Coordinating Council, will offer free developmental screenings for children in Ellis and Rush counties.

Screenings will be Friday, Jan. 8, at Hays Area Children’s Center in Hays.

The screenings are for children ages birth to 3. Children ages 3 to kindergarten-age can be screened at no cost if parents have a specific concern about the child’s development.

The screenings help track progress in several developmental areas, including speech, language, vision, hearing, thinking, motor skills and personal-social behavior. Parents who have any concerns about their child’s development are encouraged to make an appointment, as screening can help catch possible problems at a younger age and lead to better outcomes.

To make an appointment or for more information, call Hays Area Children’s Center, (785) 625-3257. Appointments should be made at least 24 hours in advance, as some paperwork is required.

FHSU wrestling drops MIAA opener at Central Oklahoma

FHSU Athletics

EDMOND, Okla. – Fort Hays State held a brief lead but gave away too many bonus points in a 30-13 loss at Central Oklahoma on Tuesday evening (Jan. 5) in the first conference dual of the season. The Tigers are now 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the MIAA, while UCO went to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA.

Final Results

Adam Ludwin gave the Tigers their only lead of the night by scoring a 16-4 major decision over Josh Breece at 125 pounds to open the dual. However, the lead went away immediately with the Tigers open at 133 pounds forfeiting six points to the Bronchos. The UCO two-point lead grew to eight at 12-4 when Noah Killip was pinned in 1:49 by Josh Ailey at 141 pounds.

The Tigers were able to make a run with consecutive decision wins. William Homalon won a high-scoring match at 149 pounds 16-13 over No. 7 ranked Spencer Rutherford, then Joey Dozier followed with a 6-5 decision over Jeromy Davenport at 157 pounds. Dozier was down two late, but scored a reversal then tacked on a riding time point for keeping control the majority of the first period. FHSU trailed by two once more, 12-10, heading into the 165-pound match.

Kregg Clarke  avoided giving up bonus points at 165 pounds, dropping a 9-3 decision to Danny Carillo, but Dylan Wiesner fell victim to a pin by Mason Thompson at 174 pounds as UCO pushed its lead out to 11, 21-10, with three matches to go.

Jon Inman  pulled the Tigers within eight scoring a 7-2 decision over Brock Warren at 184 pounds. Inman remains the No. 6 ranked wrestler nationally at 184 pounds with just one loss on the season.

The final two matches went to the Bronchos’ way as Cash Drylie  lost by a 6-3 decision to Brody Largent at 197 pounds and  Dakota Gulley  was pinned by Kyle Factor late in the third period (6:37) at 285 pounds.

Fort Hays State returns home for non-conference action against Adams State on Saturday (Jan. 9) at 2 pm.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A man in a Kansas prison for the 1984 murder of a Sedgwick County man now faces another murder charge in the Missouri death of a teen who disappeared more than 30 years ago.

The Wichita Eagle reports that 57-year-old Martin Priest has been charged with capital murder in Missouri.

Court documents say Priest killed the teen, identified as “T.R.,” by strangling her in May 1984 in Eldon, Missouri.

Priest could face life in prison if convicted.

Priest has been in prison since being convicted of first-degree murder in the killing of 25-year-old William Mayhugh on Christmas 1984. He could be released on that charge as early as August.

Kansas Department of Corrections spokesman Adam Pfannenstiel says Priest could be transferred to Missouri to face the charge.

On Tuesday, he announced a series of long-awaited executive steps aimed at curbing gun violence despite opposition in Congress to new gun laws. Several members of the Kansas congressional delegation reacted to the move on social media.

Screen-Shot-2016-01-05-at-8.34.13-AM.pngFINNEY COUNTY – A Scott City man died in an accident just before 4 p.m. on Tuesday in Finney County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Peterbilt semi driven by Clark T. Anderson, 56, Holdrege, NE., was southbound on U.S. 83 nine miles south of U.S. 50 junction.

The semi swerved to avoid a collision with another southbound vehicle that had slowed or stopped to turn.

The semi entered the northbound lane and struck a northbound 2012 Ford F150 driven by Colter J. Berry, 28, Scott City.

Anderson and Berry were transported to St. Catherine’s Hospital where Berry died.

Anderson was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Kansas to start new mentoring program for poor, foster kids

Kansas Department for Children and FamiliesTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas is preparing to start a new program to provide mentors for poor residents receiving cash assistance from the state and for foster children reaching adulthood.

Gov. Sam Brownback and officials from the state Department for Children and Families officials were having a Wednesday afternoon news conference to discuss the details of the new program. First lady Mary Brownback also was expected to participate.

Brownback said in October that his administration was working on a mentoring program for the poor after seeing similar programs help hundreds of adult prison inmates and juvenile offenders. Brownback said then one issue would be finding enough volunteer mentors.

The department said the new mentoring program also would help formerly abused and neglected children who are too old to stay in foster care.

Late run lifts Texas past Kansas State

By JIM VERTUNO
AP Sports Writer

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Isaiah Taylor scored 17 points and Texas overcame a tough shooting night with some key late-game 3-pointers to beat Kansas State 60-57 Tuesday night.

Javan Felix scored 14 for Texas (9-5, 1-1 Big 12) and his 3-pointer with just under 4 minutes left gave Texas its first lead of the second half. Barry Brown scored 15 for Kansas State (10-4, 0-2), but two 3-point attempts in the final seconds were both partially blocked.

The win let Texas and new coach Shaka Smart avoid the program’s third 0-2 start in the Big 12 in four years.

The Longhorns still struggled to find offensive rhythm after losing senior center Cam Ridley to a foot injury for 8-to-10 weeks three games ago. But despite a 6 of 23 shooting effort on 3-pointers, the Longhorns got key long-range baskets from Felix and Connor Lammert down the stretch to secure the win.

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) — A 31-year-old Johnson County man will serve at least 40 years in prison for sexually molesting an 8-year-old girl.

Robert Donovan Burton was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison with no chance of parole for 40 years for abusing the girl at an Olathe home in late 2012 and early 2013.

The Kansas City Star reports it was Burton’s second conviction for a sex crime involving a child. In 2005, he pleaded guilty in Johnson County District Court to attempted rape of a child younger than 14. In that case, his 12-year-old victim later gave birth to a child fathered by Burton.

The girl in the latest case reported to authorities that Burton molested her after showing her pornographic videos on his cellphone.

Online food directory aims to link Kan. farmers with consumers

Screen Shot 2016-01-05 at 3.43.03 PMWICHITA, Kansas (AP) — A Wichita native has developed an online directory of farmers in hopes of connecting them with digital consumers.

The Wichita Eagle reports that 31-year-old Mikel Bowyer started working on the ICT Food Circle project after joining a civic hacking organization that aimed to improve the community through public data projects.

The site currently allows consumers to browse and contact farmers based on what products they sell. In the future, Bowyer wants to offer consumers a look at each farms’ real-time inventory.

Bowyer has been working on ICT Food Circle as a side project to his part-time and full-time jobs. He hopes to eventually register the site as a nonprofit.
