KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Jackie Bradley Jr. and Mookie Betts homered to back a strong start by David Price, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 5-2 on Wednesday night to salvage a split of their day-night doubleheader.
The Royals won the opener 3-2 behind a strong performance by Ian Kennedy and their bullpen.
It was Price (6-1) who shined in the nightcap, allowing two runs over 7 1/3 innings. Junichi Tazawa got through the rest of the eighth before Craig Kimbrel handled a scoreless ninth for his 11th save.
The Red Sox were clinging to a 2-1 lead when they loaded the bases off Edinson Volquez (4-4) with two outs in the sixth inning. Christian Vazquez dribbled a single up the middle to score two runs, giving the Red Sox plenty of cushion the way their left-hander was pitching.
HAYS, Kan. – The TMP-Marian softball team scored 11 runs on 15 hits and rolled to an 11-1, five inning victory over Southwestern Heights to win their own 3A regional Wednesday at the TMP-Marian Softball Complex and advance to the 3A state tournament.

The Monarchs scored single runs in each of the first three innings then added four in the fourth and fifth.
Bailey Lacy went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles to lead the offensive explosion and also picked up the win in the circle. Lacy allowed the one run on two hits with 12 strikeouts and no walks. Alison Helget and Emily Schulte both had three hits. Schulte drove in three runs.
The Monarchs beat Scott City in the semifinals 12-3. They scored four runs in the first inning and four more in the second then blew the game open with a run in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Alison Helget and Brianna Romme both had three hits and Bailey Lacy drove in three. Helget picked up the win with nine strikeouts and three walks and eight hits.
The Monarchs have won four straight and six of their last seven and will take a 17-6 record in to the 3A state tournament next Thursday in Manhattan. It’s the first state tournament appearance for TMP-M since 2010 and the eighth in program history.
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A man charged in the shooting deaths of a Wichita couple during a robbery has pleaded guilty.
The Wichita Eagle reports that 19-year-old Carlos Delacadena-Edwards pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree intentional murder and one count of aggravated robbery on Monday as part of a plea agreement.
Delacadena-Edwards and 21-year-old Steve Wade Edwards II are accused of killing 72-year-old Godofredo Moreno and his 71-year-old wife, Martha, in October 2014 while trying to collect a debt from the couple’s son.
Delacadena-Edwards was 17 at the time, but he was tried as an adult. He is scheduled to be sentenced July 13.
Edwards II pleaded guilty last week to two counts of first-degree felony murder, aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary.

SHAWNEE COUNTY – Law enforcement authorities in Shawnee County are asking the public for help to locate a person of interest.
Jesse Hughes, 19, Topeka, is wanted for two counts of Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault and Child Endangerment as a result of a shooting on Southwest 37th Terrace in Topeka, according to a media release.
The suspect left the area in a brown 4-door car. He is considered armed and dangerous.

NEW YORK (AP) — A study by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau finds that people who put their cars up as collateral for what are supposed to be short-term emergency loans are being hit with interest rates of 300 percent.
Like payday loans, borrowers have a high likelihood of renewing the loan instead of paying it off. They wind up getting mired in debt and have a high rate of repossession.
HAYS – The Hays High Indians beat Buhler and McPherson Wednesday to win the 4A-D1 Regional softball tournament at the Bickle Schmidt Sports Complex in Hays. The Indians improved to 10-10 on the season and have qualified for the state tournament next week in Salina.

Hays High hit three home runs in the championship game and come from behind to beat McPherson 14-11.
McPherson jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning as the first five hitters reached base and came in to score.
Hays would chip away at the Bullpups lead scoring one in the first and four in the third inning, highlighted by an Albany Schaffer two-run home run making it 6-5 McPherson after three innings.
After McPherson scored three in the top of the fourth to go up 9-5 the Indian bats came alive scoring eight runs on seven hits. The Indians got a pair of two-run home runs from Nicole Dinkel and Shannon Schumacher, her first of the season putting Hays up 13-9 after four innings.

Freshmen Jaysa Wichers allowed just two runs on three hits and struck out four in three and two-thirds innings to earn the win in relief.
Schaffer was two-for-two, scored three times and drove in two. Tessa Stickel was three-for-three scored twice and drove in two.

In the first game of the day, the semifinal matchup with Buhler the Indians scored six runs in the sixth inning in the 11-3 win.
Tessa Stickel was three-for-four with a two-run home run and scored three times. Albany Schaffer was also on base three times and scored three runs.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Colleagues of a slain Kansas police detective say the late officer’s handcuffs will be used on the man charged in the killing when the suspect is released from the hospital.
Kansas City, Kansas, Police Chief Terry Zeigler described the plan in a tweet that says “words cannot express what this means to our department.”
The Kansas City Star reports that it’s not yet clear when 28-year-old Curtis Ayers will be released from the hospital.
Ayers is accused of fatally shooting Kansas City, Kansas, police Detective Brad Lancaster. Ayers has been hospitalized since being shot by police hours later in Kansas City, Missouri, during his May 9 arrest.
McPHERSON, Kan. – Buhler scored five runs in the fifth inning to break open a one-run game and defeat the Hays High Indians 6-0 in the McPherson 4A Division I regional semifinals at the Grant Sports Complex.

Marcus Altman allowed all six runs, five earned, on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 4 2/3 innings and suffered the loss.
The Indians (12-9) were held to three hits, two of them in the sixth inning, and had only four runners get past first base.
LARNED, Kan. – TMP-Marian was held to one hit and lost 7-1 to Lakin Wednesday afternoon in the semifinals of the Larned 3A regional. The Broncs scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break open a 1-1 tie. The big frame came after the Monarchs scored a run off an error in the top of the inning.
The Monarchs committed three errors in the inning that kicked the door wide open for the Broncs.
Lakin’s Ryder Yakel struck out 11 and walked none in the complete game victory.
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor says claims of sexual discrimination raised in a lawsuit by two former employees are inaccurate and unsubstantiated.
The two-term Democrat said Wednesday the lawsuit had nothing to do with his decision, announced earlier this month, not to seek re-election. He says he made it clear when he ran that he would only serve two terms.
Recent filings in the 2012 federal lawsuit have made public alleged sexist comments and other issues the two women contend created a hostile work environment. Those details surfaced as Taylor seeks to have the case decided in his favor.
The fired employees say Taylor made derogatory comments about women. Taylor says their court filing is nothing more than muckraking, and he looks forward to the judge’s summary judgment.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Eric Hosmer homered for the second straight day, the Royals turned their first three hits off Boston’s Steven Wright into runs, and Kansas City held off the Red Sox 3-2 on Wednesday to open a split-doubleheader.
Hosmer followed a single by Alcides Escobar with a homer in the first inning, and Lorenzo Cain added a sacrifice fly following a triple by Jarrod Dyson in the sixth for the Royals’ only offense.
It proved to be enough for Ian Kennedy and their bullpen.
Kennedy allowed two runs on six hits and a walk over 5 2/3 innings, striking out nine, before Brian Flynn — who earned his first career win — and Luke Hochevar combined to strike out four consecutive batters.
Wade Davis worked around a single in ninth for his ninth save.
Wright (3-4) surrendered five hits without a walk in a complete game for Boston.
