FHSU faculty members receive President’s Gold Volunteer Service Award

Five Fort Hays State University faculty members have received the gold level President’s Volunteer Service Award for accumulating more than 1,000 hours over a 12-month period as Google trainers.

Faculty who received the award are Dr. Kevin Splichal and Dr. Suzanne Becking, assistant professors of advanced education programs; Dr. Robert Moody, associate professor of advanced education programs; Amie Wright, assistant director of assessment and accreditation for the College of Education; and Erica Fisher, an advisor in the Student Engagement and Advising Center. Former faculty member Dr. Adam Holden also received the award.

The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes United States citizens and lawfully admitted, permanent residents of the United States who have achieved the required number of hours of service.

The award is an initiative of the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that engages more than 5 million Americans in results-driven service each year via 70,000 community and faith-based organizations. The program is administered by Points of Light, the largest organization in the world dedicated to volunteer service. Through affiliates in 250 cities and partnerships with thousands of nonprofits and corporations, Points of Light engages more than 4 million volunteers in 30 million hours of service each year.

Along with the ultimate honor of presidential recognition, recipients will receive a personalized certificate, an official pin, medallion or coin and a congratulatory letter from the president of the United States.

Hays, Ellis top-seeds for softball regionals; TMP-Marian No. 3 seed

TOPEKA, Kan. – The TMP-Marian softball team will be the No. 3 seed in their own 3A regional. The Monarchs (14-6) will open with No. 6 Lakin (1-17) at 3 pm Monday (May 16) at the TMP Sports Complex. The winner will play either Scott City (15-3) or Russell (1-19) in the semifinals at 4:30 pm Tuesday (May 17). Southwestern Heights (16-2) is the No. 1 seed and will get the first round bye.  They will face the winner of Monday’s game between Larned (8-10) and Plainville/Stockton (2-16) at 3 pm Tuesday.

Hays High has garnered the top-seed for their 4A Division I regional at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex. The Indians (8-10) will open with winless Buhler (0-18) at 4:30 pm Tuesday (May 17). Ulysses (7-11) is the No. 2 seed and will face McPherson (7-13) in the other semifinal game.

Ellis is the No. 1 seed in their 2-1A regional hosted by Sylvan-Lucas. The Railers (10-6) will receive a first-round bye and play the winner of Monday’s (May 16) game between Sylvan-Lucas (8-12) and Bennington (0-19) at 3 pm on Wednesday, May 18. Republic County (12-8) and Lincoln (10-8) meet in the other semifinal.

Authorities investigate drowning of Kansas girl

drown drowningGREENWOOD COUNTY – Law enforcement authorities are investigating a child drowning on Tuesday in Greenwood County.

A seven-year-old girl died after being pulled from the water at the Fall River Bridge just west of Eureka, according to a media release.

Deputies with the sheriff’s department, EMS and Eureka City Rescue responded to a possible drowning at the bridge just before 5p.m.

They saw a man clinging to a log in the river below a low-water dam and were able to locate a child in the water.

Two deputies entered the river and pulled the girl out of the water.

The girl was transported to the Greenwood County Hospital where she was pronounced dead.  Name of the victim has not been released.

HHS, TMP both three seeds, Ellis No. 1 for next week’s regional baseball tournaments

TOPEKA, Kan. – Both the Hays High and TMP-Marian baseball teams will be the No. 3 seed in their respective regional baseball tournaments. The Monarchs (13-5) will open postseason play Monday (May 16) at 5 pm in the Larned 3A Regional against Scott City (3-17). The winner will play No. 2 seed Lakin (15-3) in the semifinals at 4 pm on Tuesday (May 17) in Larned. The host Indians (15-1) are the No. 1 seed and will play the winner of Monday’s first game between Syracuse (11-7)  and Ellsworth (8-12).

Hays High (11-7) will face Buhler (15-5) at 4 pm Tuesday (May 17) in the McPherson 4A Divison I Regional. The host Bullpups (15-5) are the No. 1 seed and opens with Ulysses (7-11) at 2 pm Tuesday. The two winners meet in the regional title game at 6 pm.

Ellis is the No. 1 seed for their own 2-1A regional and will receive a first-round bye. The Railers (12-4) will play at 6 pm Monday (May 16) against the winner of the 2 pm game between Lincoln/Sylvan-Lucus (0-20) and Wichita County (0-16) game. No. 2 seed Little River (7-7) plays Ell-Saline (8-10) in the first semifinal at 4 pm. The championship game is on Wednesday, May 18 at 6 pm.

BNSF train carrying lumber to Kansas City derails

FARLEY, Mo. (AP) — BNSF Railway says 12 cars on a train derailed in northwest Missouri. No one was injured.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the derailment Tuesday evening in Platte County near Farley.

BNSF spokesman Andy Williams says seven cars went off the tracks and overturned, while five went off track but remained upright. They were part of a train with 88 cars and three locomotives carrying lumber from Lincoln, Nebraska, to Kansas City.

Williams says none of the cars contained hazardous materials.

Trick roping performance will highlight 15th Pioneer Day

Children from across the area will get a chance to learn about life in the late 1800s and early 1900s at the 15th annual Ellis County Historical Society’s Pioneer Day.

Children from kindergarten through fifth-grade will take part in Wednesday’s event and learn about rug making and clothes washing and get to tour the Harness Shop and the Volga German Haus.

Also this year, there will be a trick roping performance by Joan Wells at 6 p.m. at the Historical Society grounds. Well’s is a Women’s World Champion trick roper and inductee into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame.

Her routine is choreographed to western music and her traditional style and tricks are those seen in the early years of the wild west shows and rodeos.

Well has also made appearances on national television including performing at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Will Rogers Follies and Pawnee Bill and Buffalo Bill Wild West Show.

The roping performance is free and open to the public.

Damage reported as overnight front blows through NW Kansas

A quick moving front blew through the region overnight, with storm damage being reported west of Hays.

In Ellis, several trees were reported down after the storm, which saw win gusts in excess of 60 mph.

While Hays received just trace rainfall, areas west received between 0.15 and 0.58 inches of rain.

There was a report of 0.73 inches of rain just north of Russell, and much of Rooks County received just less than a half inch of precipitation.

While the skies are expected to clear Wednesday, the wind is expected to pick through the day, with a steady north wind between 15 and 23 mph and gusts up to 44 mph.

Former HHS, FHSU standout named RMAC baseball Coach of the Year

GoodaleCOLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A former Hays High and Fort Hays State standout has been named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference baseball Coach of the Year.

Jerod Goodale guided Colorado School of Mines within one game of capturing their first RMAC title since 1922. The Orediggers, picked fourth in the preseason coaches’ poll, ended the regular season with a 28-13 overall mark and a 21-7 conference.

Goodale was a standout catcher at both Hays High School where he earned All-Western Athletic Conference honors as a junior and senior and Fort Hays State where he was named Second Team All-RMAC as a junior and senior.

Kan. man facing federal cattle theft charges makes court appearance

LINCOLN COUNTY – A Kansas man accused of alleged cattle theft in November made a court appearance on Tuesday.

Keith Buttenhoff, 61, Lincoln,  faces seven felony charges in connection with taking cows from a pasture in Lincoln County, according to documents from the Lincoln County Attorney’s office.

He is accused of taking two Charloais, a black mix, a black white-face, a white-mix, and two additional mixed cows and faces an additional charge of criminal trespass for entering a pasture in Beaver-township in Lincoln County.

Julie Effenbeck was appointed Buttenhoff’s court appointed attorney during Tuesday’s hearing.

The preliminary hearing was continued to June 14.

 

Yankees rally past Royals despite Cain’s 3 homers

NEW YORK (AP) – Brett Gardner doubled home the tiebreaking run off Kelvin Herrera in the eighth inning, and the New York Yankees overcame three home runs by Lorenzo Cain to beat the reeling Kansas City Royals 10-7 Tuesday night.

In a back-and-forth game, Kansas City rallied from deficits of 1-0, 5-3 and 7-6 as Cain tied his career high with five RBIs. Cheslor Cuthbert also homered for the Royals, who have hit six home runs in the first two games of the series.

But Gold Glove shortstop Alcides Escobar allowed Ben Gamel’s grounder to bounce off his glove for an error with one out in the eighth, and Gardner followed with a drive to left-center off Herrera (0-1) for an 8-7 lead. Starlin Castro was hit by a pitch, and Brian McCann hit a two-run double off the fence in right-center.

Aroldis Chapman, who returned from a 29-game domestic violence suspension on Monday, followed with a hitless ninth for his first Yankees save.

HHS baseball swept at Liberal

LIBERAL, Kan. – A rough day for the Hays High baseball team who gets swept in Liberal. The Redskins scored 12 runs in the third inning to win the opener 16-1 in a game called after four innings by run-rule.

Hays scored four in the top of the fifth to break a 6-6 tie in the second game but the Redskins answered with six on the bottom of the inning and won 12-11.

Marcus Altman allowed 13 runs, 11 earned on 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings and takes the loss in the first game. He had two of the Indians three hits and drove in their only run.

Jarett Pfannenstiel gives up nine runs on 11 hits over 4 1/3 innings and takes the loss in game two. Dalton Stout and Connor Rule both had three hits with Rule, Altman, Braydon Delzeit and Jared Haynes all driving in two runs.

The 11-7 Indians wrap up their regular season at home tomorrow with a makeup doubleheader against Garden City.
