Dr. Robert Moody, associate professor of advanced education programs at Fort Hays State University, has been named the recipient of the Innovation in Teaching Award for the 2016 Summer Institute on Distance Learning and Instructional Technology.
Moody received the award for his innovations in online teaching. He works frequently with the Google platform and has been using his own GooPLE (Google Personal Learning Environment) since 2011.
“Receiving this award shows me that the work I’ve done is being validated by organizations beyond Fort Hays State,” said Moody.
Personal learning environments are an online resource that allows students to create an online learning atmosphere best suited to their individual needs. Since 2011, more than 30 FHSU professors have used PLEs to teach more than 13,000 students.
The summer institute, known as SIDLIT, is sponsored by Colleague to Colleague, a professional association of faculty, staff and administrators from Kansas and Missouri.
Moody will be recognized at the SIDLIT conference Aug. 5 and Aug. 6 at Johnson County Community College.

The Hastings bookstore chain, with 6 locations in Kansas, has filed for bankruptcy. The store issued a notice to customers on the company’s website this week.
“We believe we are on the right path, but we need additional financial support to fully execute our plan for the future. That is why we have initiated a comprehensive process to evaluate potential buyers for our business and, as part of that sale process, have filed voluntary petitions under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code along with our corporate parent (Draw Another Circle) and sister brands (Movie Stop and SPImages). The Chapter 11 process will help to prepare our business for the intended sale while also providing additional protections and financing to allow us to serve you as usual.”
Hastings stores and e-commerce business remain open
At this time, Hastings will be changing a few other programs, as outlined below:
* Hastings will no longer accept nor honor customer deposits for future movie purchases. Instead, existing deposits may be applied towards additional purchases in the store.
* Game rentals will no longer be available.
* Gift cards will expire on July 13, 30 days from today’s announcement.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Salvador Perez hit a two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning, and the Kansas City Royals held on through a shaky ninth to beat the Cleveland Indians 3-2 on Tuesday night.
Joakim Soria (3-2) pitched a scoreless eighth inning for Kansas City, then proceeded to handle the ninth with setup man Kelvin Herrera and closer Wade Davis resting after having each pitched the last three days.
Soria got Jason Kipnis to pop out with runners on first and second to end it.
Unable to solve Josh Tomlin most of the night, the Royals finally took the lead off Bryan Shaw (0-3), who gave up a single to Eric Hosmer before Perez deposited a pitch 402 feet away in left field.
It ended a bizarre streak of 11 consecutive Royals homers of the solo variety.
HODGEMAN COUNTY – Law enforcement authorities in Hodgeman County are investigating a suspect on a variety of charges involving a family member.
On Monday, Jerrel Stoudemire, 28, was arrested, according to a social media report from the Sheriff’s Department.
He is being held on a $250,000 bond on charges of aggravated battery, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated burglary, aggravated assault and criminal deprivation of property.
Stoudemire is the brother of NBA player Amar’e Stoudemire, currently on the roster of the Miami Heat.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles was on the practice field for the start of a three-day minicamp, though All-Pro safety Eric Berry was absent as his representatives negotiate a long-term contract.
Charles has been ahead of schedule after having surgery last season to repair a torn ACL in his right knee. He has been involved in some of the voluntary workouts prior to Tuesday, and has insisted all along that he intends to be ready by the start of training camp.
Charles was hurt in a Week 5 game against the Bears.
Berry has been absent all offseason after getting the franchise tag, which would pay him about $10.8 million next season. Since he has not signed the franchise tender, he is not under contract and obligated to attend the mandatory minicamp.
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – As the Von Miller contract stalemate drags on, the Denver Broncos locked down another key defender, signing linebacker Brandon Marshall to a four-year, $32 million extension.
Marshall will make about $2.5 million in 2016 and his new deal kicks in the following year and runs through 2020.
Marshall has posted back-to-back 100-tackle seasons for the Broncos, who signed him to their practice squad after he was cut twice by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2012.
His 101 stops last season came despite a broken screw in his right foot and a sprained right forefinger that required offseason surgery.
General manager John Elway originally made re-signing Miller a priority but turned his attention to Marshall after Miller rejected a six-year offer with $38.5 million guaranteed.
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Authorities say three Wichita men have been charged in the robbery of a local bank.
The Wichita Eagle reports that federal bank robbery and firearms charges were filed Tuesday against 34-year-old Raishat McGill, 29-year-old Andre Bryant and 25-year-old Elijah Shelton.
Authorities say two armed men entered Carson Bank around 10:30 a.m., demanding money from four employees inside. They forced two employees to open a vault.
The two men left with cash and drove away with another man who had stayed in the car.
Officers soon located the car and the men fled on foot until law enforcement caught them. Wichita police Sgt. Nikki Woodrow says officers recovered the money and two weapons.
It might not be a new business, but a new location near one of the busiest intersections in Hays and a new partnership gives customers access to everything automotive, including performance parts and standard automotive care, in one location at 1240 Vine.
Mid-Kansas Auto Accessories owner Devin Jacques said he is happy to be back in Hays with his new partners after a stint in his hometown of Ellis and running the business for a little over three years.
“I started out over here in Hays, on 22nd Street, and I had an opportunity become available in Ellis,” he said.
Despite living and working in Ellis, he said many of his customers were coming from Hays.
“It just wasn’t working out,” Jacques said. After seeing the location on Vine, he knew it would be a good way to move the business back to Hays.
“We opened up just a little over a month ago … and we’ve kind of been going at it here ever since,” he said. “We’re still kinda in the beginning stages as far as getting things set up and figuring out how to make things work around here.”
But with so many customers from Hays driving the streets with vehicles the business has installed accessories on – including Midwest Energy fleet vehicles – he is happy to see those vehicles in action in Hays and invites residents to look into what they could do for their vehicle.
“In the aftermarket world, there’s not much we don’t cover,” he said. “We do anything from suspension lifts to wheel and tire packages.”
While Jacques and his brother – the other employee in the business – work on building business in the new location, a partnership with Gear Head Garage’s owners Ryan Benyshek and Jeff Zerr, creates a space where almost anything a car needs can be taken care of in one location.
“They were wanting to open up their own mechanic shop over here in Hays, and it just so happens that this building was available, and it’s probably more than I would want to take on by myself,” Jacques said.
So they teamed up.
“Now Gear Head Garage can cover the mechanical side of things, from oil changes to brakes all the way to complete engine swaps,” Jacques said. “Basically, you can come in here and get everything automotive covered, now matter what you want,”

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas secretary of state’s office late Tuesday instructed county officials to put on election rolls the thousands of people who registered at motor vehicle offices without providing proof of U.S. citizenship, but only allow them to vote for federal offices.
The guidelines were issued after the 10th Circuit U.S. District Court of appeals ordered Kansas to begin Tuesday adding more than 18,000 voters whose registrations had been cancelled or suspended.
U.S. District Judge Julie Robinson’s order strikes a blow to a Kansas law that since January 2013 has required voters to provide proof of citizenship.
About 44 percent of Kansas voters register when getting their driver’s licenses under the federal “motor-voter law.”
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A conservation group has finalized the purchase of about 30,000 acres of lesser prairie chicken habitat in southwest Kansas.
The Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies said Monday in a news release that its acquisition of the Sunview Ranch in Hamilton County is a significant conservation development.
The ranch is located in a sand sagebrush area which covers portions of Kansas, Colorado and Oklahoma that once contained the highest density of lesser prairie chickens in the country.
The group says the property is one of the largest remaining contiguous tracks of sand sagebrush prairie in the region.
Its spokesman, Bill Van Pelt, declined to disclose the purchase price.
Funding comes from voluntary contributions from “industry partners” enrolled in the lesser prairie chicken conservation plan.
