Larks open NBC World Series play at 7pm Friday

WICHITA – The Hays Larks now know who and when they will play at the 82nd National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita. The Jayhawk League champions will open pool play Friday night at 7 pm against the Hutchinson (KS) Monarchs. They will face the San Diego (CA) Waves at 7 pm Sunday then close out pool play Tuesday at 4:30 pm against the Northwest (WA) Honkers.

The Larks (37-10) won both the first and second half Jayhawk League titles then clinched their ninth Jayhawk League championship with a sweep of Dodge City in the best of three Jayhawk League Championship Series. They are making their fifth World Series appearance in six years and their 14th since 2000.

The NBC has changed their format for the 2016 tournament. Instead of a 16-team double-elimination tournament in both the first and championship weeks, pool play will be utilized. Four, four-team pools will play three games each with the pool winners advancing to the semifinals in the First Week. The first and second place teams advance to the quarterfinals during Championship Week where they meet for single elimination bracket play.

THE OPPONENTS
The Monarchs (38-12) won both the Kansas Collegiate League Baseball regular season and tournament titles. This is their second straight NBC World Series appearance after a 1-2 finish last year. They beat the Larks 2013 NBC WS 3-1 and lost to Hays 11-1 in the 2012 tournament.

The San Diego Waves are making their 11th straight NBC World Series appearance. They went 2-2 finished seventh in last year’s tournament and went 1-2 against the Jayhawk League. They’re best finish came in 2001 when they were third. The finished fourth in 2011, losing to the Larks in the quarterfinals. This will be the fifth time they’ve played the Larks at the NBC WS, losing the previous four with the most recent in 2014.

The Northwest (WA) Honkers (33-19) are making their fourth NBC World Series appearance in seven years and their second straight. They went 0-2 in last year’s tournament. The Honkers qualified after a second place finish in the Pacific International League, 3  1/2 games behind defending NBC World Series champion Seattle/Cheney Studs.

HARVEY COUNTY – A Kansas county has dedicated a new memorial that honors the homeless people who died there.

The memorial along the Osage walking path was dedicated on Friday July 22, and six individuals were finally laid to rest at a serene and beautiful place, according to a report on social media.

The memorial will honor the homeless and indigent people who died in Harvey County and whose remains were never claimed.

The memorial includes a large engraved stone on a concrete pedestal, with concrete benches on either side.

In the past, after cremation, ashes were stored with the Sheriff’s Office.

The memorial was paid for without public money.

Moreland, Harrell lead Rangers to win over Royals

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Mitch Moreland homered for the fifth time in his last five starts and Lucas Harrell won in his Texas debut as the Rangers beat the Kansas City Royals 5-3 on Sunday to finish a sweep of the four-game series.

Harrell (3-2) gave up three runs and four hits — including solo home runs to Eric Hosmer and Drew Butera — in six innings. The 31-year-old right-hander was acquired from Atlanta last Wednesday to help the Rangers’ injury-riddled starting rotation.

Moreland’s two-run homer was his 18th this season, the last five coming within 16 at-bats. Nomar Mazara also homered against the Royals, who have allowed an AL-high 141 homers this season.

Sam Dyson earned his 22nd save.

Eric Hosmer and Drew Butera homered for Kansas City, which has lost eight of its last nine games and 10 of its last 11 road games.

Dillon Gee (3-5) gave up four runs on seven hits over six innings.

Royals place Davis on disabled list with flexor strain

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have placed right-handed closer Wade Davis on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday with a flexor strain and recalled left-hander Matt Strahm from Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

Davis had an MRI in Kansas City on Sunday morning after being sent home from the Royals’ weekend series at Texas.

Manager Ned Yost said it’s the same injury that sent Davis to the disabled list in early July.

Davis has converted 21 of 23 save opportunities in 35 appearances this season with a 1.60 ERA. In his most recent outing Wednesday, Davis allowed three walks for the first time as a reliever.

“Hopefully, he’ll be back around the end of the 15 days,” Yost said.

Strahm, 24, was moved to the bullpen recently after making 18 starts. Splitting last season between Class A Wilmington and Class A Lexington, Strahm had a 2.59 ERA and 121 strikeouts in 94 innings.

On Thursday, Kansas City placed right-handed reliever Luke Hochevar on the disabled list with symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome.

FHSU general accounting program to be offered online this fall

fhsu EFA-bannerFHSU University Relations and Marketing

Starting this fall, students who want to begin earning a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in general accounting can start their course work through the Fort Hays State University Virtual College.

Fort Hays State will be one of the few state universities to offer a full accounting program online, and one of the first in Kansas.

Nine core business courses and the general education courses for the 124-hour general accounting program are already online, as are three courses in the 18-hour accounting core, said Dr. Dosse Toulaboe, chair of the Department of Economics, Finance and Accounting.

The remaining core accounting courses and selected accounting electives will be developed for online delivery during the upcoming academic year, said Toulaboe. In the fall of 2017, the coursework in accounting will be available online.

“We want the content and rigor to be the same on campus and online,” he said.

“Our on-campus accounting programs have earned a reputation for quality with accounting firms and other employers in Kansas and across the nation,” said Dr. Mark Bannister, dean of the College of Business and Entrepreneurship at FHSU. “Our intent is to offer distance learning students a similarly high-quality educational experience.”

Dr. Cole Engel, assistant professor of accounting, said that developing a curriculum for distance learners is challenged by the fact that accounting courses are highly sequential.

“Before you take Intermediate Accounting II, you have to take Intermediate Accounting I, but before intermediate I you have to take Principles of Accounting II,” he said. “And before you take Principles II you have to take Principles I.”

Every course in the accounting core and most courses in the accounting electives have prerequisite courses. “Prerequisites are rigidly enforced,” he said.

The sequence also means that any given course is offered in some semesters and not in others, which is another challenging factor for offering an accounting program online. It also means, Engel said, that “good advising is going to be critical and will require extra training in advising.”

“Accounting is not a program frequently offered online because it is such a challenging program to develop and manage,” he said.

The primary motivation to develop the online accounting program is that, despite the difficulty and complexity of online accounting coursework, demand for accountants is high and will continue to be high for some years to come, said Engel, citing studies by professional accounting organizations.

“There is a huge, documented demand for talented and experienced accounting professionals,” said Engel.

The education in general accounting is for people who are “re-tooling” for career advancement. General accountancy is for people who work for corporations or business and industry groups. Career paths include accounts payable supervisor; bookkeeper; cost accountant; governmental accountant; internal auditor; plant accountant; and staff accountant.

Engel and Toulaboe emphasized that the general accounting program is not for people seeking to be Certified Public Accountants. That is an entirely different track not generally offered online. Engel said CPAs are licensed by the states, and each state has separate educational requirements in addition to the national exam.

Some states, such as Texas, severely limit the amount of online coursework on the transcript of a candidate for CPA licensure. Students seeking licensure are encouraged to contact their state board of accountancy for information on education requirements in their states.

Demand, however, is also high for business and industry accountants, and that is the focus of the general accounting degree program.

KWEC to host 4th annual meteor shower party

kweclogoFHSU University Relations and Marketing

The Kansas Wetlands Education Center will host its fourth annual Perseid Meteor Shower Viewing Party — a free, fun-filled family evening of crafts, games, snacks and stargazing — at 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center.

The Kansas Wetlands Education Center, 592 NE K-156 Highway, is at the southeast side of Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area, northeast of Great Bend.

Perseid Meteor Shower occurs every year when the earth passes through the trail of dust and debris left by the Swift-Tuttle comet. The shower has more than 50 meteors per hour at its peak. The shower got its name because the meteors appear to come from the constellation Perseus.

Children will be provided with activities such as playing with stardust slime, creating their own star art and listening to a tale about Perseus on the star walk. S’mores and refreshments will be available.

In addition to the activities and crafts, the FHSU Science and Mathematics Education Institute will have its inflatable planetarium for guaranteed star-viewing.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Health officials are puzzled about how the most basic baking ingredient — flour — became contaminated with bacteria normally found in animal feces.

The tainted flour has sickened 46 people in 21 states and prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to warn cooks to treat it like other foods that could cross-contaminate kitchen surfaces.

Plus, the Food and Drug Administration is cautioning consumers to never taste raw cookie dough or cake batter.

HUTCHINSON— A Kansas man convicted on charges of indecent solicitation of a child and furnishing alcohol to a minor for illicit purposes is scheduled for a parole hearing in October with a public comment period next month.

John Scazzafavo, 31, Burrton was convicted and sentenced for furnishing alcohol to a 15-year-old girl at her older sister’s home in Hutchinson in November of 2008.

The state says he served those drinks in an attempt to get the young girl to have sexual relations, or at the very least, allow him to touch her in an inappropriate way.

He admitted that he went on a three-month drinking binge because of personal problems, but denies the allegations.

He was originally granted community corrections in this case, but violated the corrections and was ordered to serve the sentence.

He will go before the parole board in October for possible parole in November.
