Kansas Republicans show little appetite for anti-Trump push

JOHN HANNA, AP Political Writer

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas delegates to the Republican National Convention are showing little appetite for a struggling, last-minute effort to block Donald Trump’s presidential nomination even though most of the state’s contingent is bound to other candidates.

Some of the state’s 40 delegates take comfort in the conservative national platform drafted ahead of the convention, which opens Monday.

Others contend it’s foolhardy to attempt to deny Trump the nomination following his victories in caucuses and primaries earlier this year.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz won the state’s caucuses in March, and 24 delegates are bound to vote for him at the convention, compared to nine for Trump. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio has six delegates, and Ohio Gov. John Kasich, one.

Kansas delegates said they’ll support Trump in November, regardless of their current affiliations now.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) —  In June, more than 2,400 Syrian refugees arrived in the United States.

Some have begun settling in Nebraska.

In November, Gov. Sam Brownback issued an executive order forbidding any state agencies or organizations that receive state grant money from helping relocate Syrian refugees in Kansas.

The Omaha World-Herald reports 48 Syrian refugees quietly moved into Nebraska with the help of relief agencies.

Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts continues to question whether federal authorities are doing enough to check the backgrounds of refugees, but he acknowledges that he has no power to stop their arrival. Federal officials have defended the security procedures they are using.

The refugees that arrived recently are still adjusting to Nebraska. Faedah Karbouj says she has been impressed with how friendly the people of Omaha are.

Kansas Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer said the well-being of Kansans is a higher priority than helping refugees.

B-29 takes to Kansas skies after 6 decades on ground

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — For the first time in decades, the Boeing B-29 Superfortress known as “Doc” has taken to the skies.

Since last fall, the restoration effort reached a number of milestones, including a fundraising campaign that netted about $160,000.

They’re called “day campers,” the ones who drive from their home to campus each morning for the High Plains Music Camp.

But that name is a little deceiving for Blake and Bianca Lucas, who have spent the past week at Fort Hays State University during their first-ever trip to Kansas.

The Lucas siblings, you see, are from Syracuse, N.Y. Definitely a long commute, and if there was a prize awarded campers who made the longest trip, Blake and Bianca would win hands down.

However, they are still considered day campers because they are spending the nights with their parents, Tom and Lisa Lucas, at a local hotel.

“That is kind of funny that we’re day campers, considering where we’re from,” said 16-year-old Blake, who is participating in the vocal portion of the camp.

“When I tell people I’m from New York, they stare at me,” added 12-year-old Bianca, a flutist.

Bianca was excited after the first two days of camp when she earned the honors of first chair flute in the middle school band.

While campers annually come from all across Kansas and surrounding states for the longest-running camp of its kind, those from thousands of miles away usually have a unique situation surrounding their attendance.

Such is the case for the Lucas family.

Lisa is in her fifth semester of working on her master’s degree in school psychology through FHSU’s Virtual College. When she decided to pursue her master’s, Lisa researched online programs and found FHSU’s program to her liking.

“I discovered that it is a very reputable program that eventually leads to certification as a school psychologist in my state, as well as certification through the National Association of School Psychologists,” Lisa said. “I am grateful for being able to obtain such a high-quality education that gives me the flexibility to maintain my work and take care of my family.”

One of the requirements in Lisa’s master’s curriculum is attending a one-week seminar on the FHSU campus called “Appraisal of Children,” so Lisa knew she would be coming to Kansas this summer. Her family — all native New Yorkers — wanted to come along and see what Kansas, and Fort Hays State, was all about.

“So I Googled camps in the area,” Lisa said, “and I was very, very happy that not only was there a camp on campus this particular week, but it was a music camp.”

Both Blake and Bianca are heavily involved in music — vocal and instrumental — and theater back home, and they were excited to learn about the music camp. They were impressed after the first day on campus.

“It’s pretty intense, a lot of work to do this week,” said Blake, who has been pleased with the quality of instruction at the camp.

“I was nervous at first,” Bianca said, “but then I started making a lot of friends.”

Tom — a songwriter/musician himself — accompanied his family to Hays, and it’s been a vacation to remember for the entire family, Lisa said.

“We were pretty lucky,” she said. “The stars all lined up for us to be here.”

The student concerts will complete the music camp Saturday, but the memories of spending a week at Fort Hays State will last a long time.

“I have really enjoyed talking with everyone here,” said Blake, who said if he had the opportunity, he would like to return to the music camp sometime.

“One night, our daughter said, ‘It feels like we live here now,’ ” Lisa said. “I thought that was a real sign of how welcomed she feels here.”

Police: Kan. man jailed for drug distribution after report of domestic dispute

Screen Shot 2016-07-15 at 5.03.50 PMHUTCHINSON A Kansas man was jailed Thursday after police were called to the report of a domestic disturbance at a home in Hutchinson.

James Garcia, 28, is jailed for possession of cocaine with intent to sell within 1,000 feet of a school, battery DV, possession of marijuana in what may have been a growing operation, possession of drug paraphernalia and no tax stamp.

The victim of the battery answered the door when police arrived and the officer noted a bruise on her forearm as well as a cut on the side of her face. She alleges she had been slapped, choked and shaken during the altercation.

There was a small child in the home and police decided they needed to check on the welfare of that child. In doing so, they found three small marijuana plants in a container on the stove. That led to a search warrant and they allege they also found what appeared to be a growing operation in the basement.

They also allege that they found .17 grams of cocaine in a bedroom as well as items used to either sell drugs or for personal use.

The arrest came during the noon hour Thursday and Garcia is jailed on a $34,000 bond.

During a court appearance, he denied any knowledge of cocaine and was also concerned whether this case would be presumptive prison. Magistrate Judge Cheryl Allen noted that no formal charges have been filed, nor does she have any knowledge of his criminal background, so it wouldn’t be possible to answer that question. He has drug convictions out of Finney County and was discharged from community corrections last year.
