Harley-Davidson motorcycles investigated for brake failure

NHTSANEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. government is investigating complaints from Harley-Davidson riders who say their motorcycle brakes failed without warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the investigation covers 430,000 motorcycles with model years between 2008 and 2011. The investigation covers motorcycles with an anti-lock braking system.

Riders reported that the brakes on the hand lever and foot pedal did not work, causing one driver to crash into a garage door. The NHTSA say it received 43 complaints, three reports of crashes and two reports of injuries.

The NHTSA says it is possible that some riders who experienced brake failure did not change the motorcycle’s brake fluid every two years as recommended by Harley-Davidson.

Representatives of Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson Inc. did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday morning.

Resurfacing work to start on U.S. 36 in Phillips County

KDOT

The Kansas Department of Transportation expects to begin work next week on a resurfacing project along a portion of U.S. 36 in Phillips County, weather permitting.

Workers will be applying a chip seal on the roadway starting at the east city limits of Phillipsburg and extending 13 miles east to the Phillips/Smith County line. A chip seal is a resurfacing action that protects the pavement from moisture and prolongs the life of the roadway. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in the construction zone and controlled by flaggers and a pilot car. Minor delays, not exceeding 15 minutes, can be expected. Motorists are encouraged to slow down, obey the warning signs and “Give ‘em a Brake!” when approaching and driving through work zones. The project is expected to be completed by the end of July, weather permitting.

Mid America Road Builders Inc. is the primary contractor for the project with a total contract cost of $535,000.

Kansas man sentenced in attack on utility company employee

Getz
Getz

RENO COUNTY – A Kansas man who entered a plea to a single count of making a criminal threat, while the state dropped all the other charges against him, was granted one year of probation on Friday.

Kerry Getz, 62, had been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery causing reckless bodily harm and criminal damage to property, but as a part of a plea agreement, the state dropped all the other charges.

On March 17, a sub-contracted employee of Westar Energy was at the Getz home replacing electrical meters on the houses in the area.

Getz became angry and began arguing with the Westar worker, Carter Coulteur who then fled to his truck for safety.

Getz then allegedly followed him in his own vehicle and blocked in the worker.

Another confrontation occurred and Getz allegedly damaged the Westar vehicle and attempted to take property from the truck.

In one of the verbal exchanges, he made the comment to the Westar employee that he had a weapon and may have to use it.

Getz also used his vehicle to run the Westar vehicle off the road.

The employee was able to escape with no injuries.

HaysMed sexual assault nurse examiners
earn multiple certifications

Hays Medical Center

Two HaysMed nurses have recently earned board certifications from the Commission for Forensic Nursing Certification. Susan Smith, RN, BSN, SANE-A and Allison Jones, RN, SANE-A have each earned the credential of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner – Pediatric (SANE-P).  This is their second specialty certification focused on the care of sexual assault patients.  Smith and Jones join the ranks of only 14 Kansas nurses credentialed in SANE-P.

The earned credential of SANE-P designates that the recipient has achieved the highest standards of forensic nursing for sexual assault nurse examiners in the pediatric and adolescent population.  A forensic nurse is a nurse who provides specialized care for patients who are victims and/or perpetrators of trauma (both intentional and unintentional).  Forensic nurses are nurses first and foremost.

Allison Jones

However, the specialized role of forensic nurses goes far beyond medical care; forensic nurses also have a specialized knowledge of the legal system and skills in injury identification, evaluation and documentation. After attending to a patient’s immediate medical needs, a forensic nurse often collects evidence, provides medical testimony in court, and consults with legal authorities. Forensic nurses at HaysMed conduct medical-legal examinations for victims and perpetrators of sexual assault, child abuse and domestic violence victims. The team currently has five trained SANE nurses and two in training.
Smith and Jones are both nurses in the Emergency Department. Smith has been employed at HaysMed since 2000 and has been a member of the SANE team since 2012. Jones has been employed at HaysMed and been a member of the SANE team since 2010.

TMP alum receives honorary doctorate from Washburn

Schmidt

This spring, Hays native and Thomas More Prep-Marian High School graduate Mayo Schmidt received an honorary degree from Washburn University.

Schmidt, who spoke at the 2014 Hays Area Chamber of Commerce annual banquet, received an honorary Doctor of Commerce at a May ceremony, according to Washburn University Relations.

After his college career at Washburn University, Mayo signed with the Miami Dolphins but left to pursue a business career. That decision proved to be a good move as Mayo has held key management positions at General Mills and ConAgra, where he was named chief executive officer in 2005.
