Carnival worker arrested in Hays after threatening person who fired him

BY JONATHAN ZWEYGARDT
Hays Post

An Indiana man was arrested for threatening his former employer after he was fired last week in Hays.

According to Hays Assistant Chief of Police Brian Dawson, on Tuesday, June 28, 42-year-old Chad Shock of Plymouth, Ind., was let go from his employment with the carnival that was in town.

Shock reportedly had been drinking at the Horseshoe Bar and, according to police, wanted to fight the man who fired him.

Shock reportedly pulled a knife from his pocket and, when flicking it to extend the blade, it flew from his hand.

The knife was recovered and no one was injured in the incident. Shock was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault.

HaysMed chef competes in national blended burger competition

2016-06-10 10.57.04Hays Medical Center

HaysMed’s Rock Garden Café is participating in the James Beard Blended Burger Project. John Fitzthum, Executive Chef/Food Service Director at HaysMed, has created the Blue Hill Blended Burger to enter into the competition.

The Blended Burger Project encourages chefs to create a healthier, more sustainable, and tastier burger that can be enjoyed by consumers across the country, while also educating diners about the many benefits of The Blend and the future of food.  The competition was designed to create awareness that infusing a burger with a perceived more sustainable product (mushroom) not only can reduce the calories and fat, create unique flavor profiles and create sustainability. Chefs from across the country submit their entries and the public are encouraged to vote.

For the past several years, chefs have faced increasing pressure to serve healthier and more sustainable meals that reduce calories and sodium and still taste delicious. Simultaneously achieving nutrition, sustainability, and flavor is a core value of America’s food system.

Fitzthum’s creation, the Blue Hill Blended Burger, is a blend of Kansas grass-fed beef, mushrooms, garlic, onion and French Roquefort cheese. The burger is served on fresh whole wheat focaccia and topped with lettuce, tomato and cucumber. The burger has 450 calories and 668 mg of sodium. The burger name ties to a prominent grassland area in Kansas and the French Roquefort cheese is fun play on a reference to Kansas role in saving the French wine industry.

“I am always looking for ways to expand my culinary knowledge and knowledge of the idea of sustainability,” said Fitzthum. “The Blended Burger Project was a great tie in to our Healthy Kansas Hospitals Award of Excellence that HaysMed just received”

The burgers are featured at https://www.jamesbeard.org/blendedburgerproject/vote
and the public can vote now through July 31. You can place a vote every day by going to the site and typing in HaysMed in the Search Entries box and double clicking on the burger photo.

Fitzthum is offering the opportunity to taste Blue Hill Blended Burger at the Rock Garden Cafe on June 28th ~ 30th and again July 12th ~ 14th, July 19th ~ 21st and July 26th ~ 28th.

Shadid grand slam lifts Larks past Derby

DERBY – The Hays Larks scored five runs in the eighth inning to break a scoreless tie then held on for a 5-2 win over the Derby Twins Tuesday night at Panther Field. Austin O’Brien reached on an error then scored on a balk to give the Larks (22-5, 17-5 JL) the lead. Andy Shadid then hit a grand slam to put Hays up 5-0.

The Twins (8-16, 7-13 JL) used two walks and two singles to score two runs in the ninth before Chad Smith came in to get the final out with the tying run at the plate. It’s Smith’s eighth save of the season and seventh in his last seven appearances.

Sam Reed (1-0), one of five Larks pitchers used in the game, pitched a scoreless seventh and picked up the win.

The Larks improve to 2-1 in the second half of Jayhawk League play. They are off until Friday when they open a nine-game homestand with the first of three against Haysville.

Royals have four named to American League All-Star roster

Kansas City Royals Release

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Four Royals have been selected to represent the American League in the 2016 All-Star Game, Major League Baseball announced today.  Catcher Salvador Perez and first baseman Eric Hosmer will be in the starting lineup in the Midsummer Classic set for Tuesday, July 12 at San Diego’s PETCO Park.  Relief pitchers Wade Davis and Kelvin Herrera were also named to the All-Star team, giving the Royals as many as four selections for the second year in a row as well as multiple starters for the second-straight season and third time in franchise history.

The four All-Star selections are also tied for the third-most in franchise history.  Kansas City also had four players named to the squad in 1972, 1976 and 1978.  Perez received 4,965,838 votes, the most among all Major League players this year.  He becomes the second Royal to lead the Majors in All-Star voting, joining Hall of Famer George Brett (1981).

Perez, 26, will make his third-straight start behind the plate for the American League, the most by a Royals player since Brett started five seasons in a row (1981-85).  The four-time All-Star is tops among A.L. catchers in hits (74), batting average (.277), slugging percentage (.483) and tied for first in RBI (37).  His 24 two-out RBI are tied for fifth in the Majors, while he’s thrown out an A.L.-best 17 would-be basestealers.

Hosmer, 26, will be participating in his first All-Star Game, earning the starting nod at first base.  He is the first Royals’ first baseman selected to the Midsummer Classic since Mike Sweeney in 2005.  Hosmer is batting .303 with 13 homers and 49 RBI this season.  He’s collected 28 RBI since May 25, which are tied for seventh in the American League in that span.  He had a career-best 18-game hitting streak, April 10-29, which is the third-longest in MLB this season.

Davis, 30, was tabbed an All-Star for the second-straight year, though he will not participate in the game due to injury.  He’s posted a 1-0 record with 19 saves and a 1.23 ERA in 30 appearances this season, his first full year as the team’s closer.  His save total is tied for fifth in the American League, while his ERA is also fifth-best among the league’s relief pitchers.

Herrera, 26, was also selected an American League All-Star for the second-straight season.  He is 1-1 with a 1.40 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 38.2 innings this season.  He’s also tops in the Major Leagues with 21 holds this year, while he’s tied for seventh among A.L. relievers with 39 appearances.  He hasn’t allowed a hit to a right-handed hitter since June 6, while righties are just 10-for-71 (.141) against him this season.

FORD COUNTY – A Kansas woman died in an accident just after 7a.m. on Tuesday in Ford County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Dodge Charger driven by trooper Dillon S. Keller, 24, Dodge City, was responding to an accident on U.S. 50 at Road 130 in Ford County.

The Trooper was eastbound on U.S. 50 with lights and siren activated near the Spearville Truck Stop.

A 1999 Freightliner semi driven by Larry Weimer, 71, St. John, was exiting from the truck stop to go eastbound on US 50.

The State Trooper took an evasive action to avoid the semi and drove on the eastbound shoulder while hard braking.

The State Trooper corrected back onto the eastbound lane, crossed the centerline into the eastbound lane and collided with a 2007 Chrysler Sebring driven by Lucinda Lampe, 59, Offerle, that was slowing or stopping on the westbound shoulder.

The Sebring was pushed backwards and it hit a 2004 Chevy HHR driven by Brian S. Herbert, 49, Dodge City, that was behind it.

Lampe was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Frontier Forensics.

Keller was transported to Western Plains Medical Center.

Weimer and Herbert were not injured.
All four were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

The accident investigation shut down U.S. 50 between Dodge City and Kinsley for several hours on Tuesday.

The Ford County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the accident.
