Funeral arrangements made for man killed in incident with Hays police officer

OAKLEY–Funeral arrangements have been made for Joseph Weber on Tuesday, Aug. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Oakley.

Weber was killed after an incident following a brief chase in Hays on Thursday, Aug. 18, leading to a Hays Police officer shooting Weber near a disability training home operated by New Age Services, 2321 Timber Dr.

Details surrounding the shooting have yet to be released, leading to many in the community speculating about the use of force in the death of the 36-year-old. Weber worked at Joe Bob Outfitters of Hays, 4850 General Hays Rd, and was associated with New Age Services.

Staff at Joe Bob Outfitters declined to comment on the story.

The listed owner of Joe Bob Outfitters is the same as the listed CEO of New Age Services, according to a LinkedIn profile.

A news release from the Ellis County Attorney’s Office said Weber was not obeying officer commands after being stopped in the 2700 block of Plaza Ave at 2:33 p.m. last Thursday.

The vehicle then accelerated as it was pursued by HPD before stopping in the 2300 block of Timber Dr. where Weber got out of the vehicle.

The release further said the incident escalated until at approximately 2:41 p.m. one shot was fired by a Hays police officer, striking Weber who died from the gunshot wound.

The shooting is under investigation by the Ellis County Coroner Dr. Lyle Noordhoek, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office.

Further information has not been released from the Ellis County Attorney.
