Hays High falls to Garden City

GARDEN CITY – The Hays High Indians battled tough Friday night in Garden City but could not overcome a powerful Buffaloes team as they fall 34-0.

After neither team was able to do much of anything on their first drive the Buffaloes put together a 13-play 80 yard drive that was capped off by a 20 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jesse Nunez to Brodie Stabel. After a two-point conversion Garden City led 8-0 with just over a minute to play in the first quarter.

The Indians answered right back driving deep into Garden City territory late in the first quarter. Quarterback Hunter Brown hit Kohlton Meyers on a 30 yard pass and Meyers broke free for a 32 yard run that put Hays inside the Buffaloes red zone, but the drive would stall setting up a 26 yard field goal attempt for Logan Clark.

But the gusting southwest wind pushed the kick off line and Garden City took over at their 20 yard-line.

Garden City’s offense picked up right back where they left off and drove it 80 yards on 10 plays capped off by a Nunez one-yard touchdown run. They once again got their two-point conversion and led 16-0 with 6:26 to play in the first half.

Hays’ offense again stalled and gave to ball back to Garden City who again drove down the field and Nunez scored his second of three rushing touchdowns on the night. The two-point conversion made it 24-0. Garden City added a Zeke Hererra 34 yard field goal late in the first half and led 27-0 at halftime.

Both teams were held scoreless in the third quarter and Nunez added his final rushing touchdown, from four yards out late in the fourth to secure the Garden City victory.

Meyers led the Indians with 69 yards rushing. Brown was sacked four times in the game. Hays was able to sack Nunez twice.

Hays drops to 1-3 on the season and they are 0-3 in the Western Athletic Conference. Garden City is 4-0 and 1-0 in the WAC.

Hays is at home next Friday for homecoming against Valley Center.
