Morales homers twice, Royals score 7 in 9th to beat Twins

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Kendrys Morales had two home runs, including a three-run blast in Kansas City’s seven-run ninth inning that propelled the Royals to a 10-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night.

Morales hit a two-run shot in the first inning to help the Royals overcome the loss of catcher Salvador Perez, who left the game with a right wrist contusion after he was hit by a pitch in the sixth inning.

Brian Dozier hit his 39th home run of the season for the Twins, moving him into a tie with Rogers Hornsby (twice) and Alfonso Soriano for fourth-most home runs by a second baseman in a season. He has homered in five straight games, tying Harmon Killebrew and Marty Cordova for the longest streak in Twins history.

Former Twin Drew Butera’s bases loaded single off Brandon Kintzler (0-2) broke a 3-3 tie and got the Royals rolling in the ninth.

GEE’S START

Gee gave up three runs and eight hits and struck out two in six innings. Kelvin Herrera (2-4) pitched one inning for the win.

Yost said he thought he might have to get a tired bullpen up early when Gee served up long balls to Dozier, Trevor Plouffe and Eddie Rosario in the first two innings. But the right-hander settled in after that and allowed just two hits over the final four innings before yielding to the bullpen.

ROSTER MOVES

Royals: Recalled INF Christian Colon and selected the contracts of OF Daniel Nava and RHP Kevin McCarthy from Triple-A Omaha. OF Reymond Fuentes and RHP Nick Tepesch were designated for assignment to make room.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: OF Lorenzo Cain missed his sixth straight game because of left wrist inflammation. He is listed as day to day.

UP NEXT

The Royals send LHP Danny Duffy (11-2, 3.13) to the mound to face Twins RHP Kyle Gibson (5-9, 5.31) in the series finale. Duffy has been dominant for most of the season, but has allowed at least eight hits in three straight starts. Gibson has been largely disappointing in his Twins career, but is 5-4 with a 3.10 ERA in 10 starts against Kansas City.

ROYALS-PEREZ

Royals C Perez leaves game after being hit on right wrist

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez left Tuesday night’s game against Minnesota night in the sixth inning after he was hit on the right wrist during an at-bat against Ervin Santana.

Santana’s pitch ran in on Perez’s hands and hit him right on the wrist of his throwing hand. Perez leaped out of the batter’s box and crouched to his knees as he winced in pain. After several minutes Perez left the field and went back into the clubhouse for further examination.

The Royals said he had a right wrist bruise.

Perez has 20 home runs and 59 RBIs in 121 games for the defending champions, who started the day two games back of the second AL wild card spot.

Kansas man charged with child sex, criminal threat enters plea

WardHUTCHINSON — A Kansas man bound over for trial in a child sex case was arraigned Tuesday and entered not guilty pleas.

Tanner Ward, 23, is charged with two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, aggravated burglary and criminal threat. The charges involving a child 14 to 16 years of age are alleged to have occurred on January and January 11.

The aggravated burglary is alleged to have occurred on June 23 where he allegedly went into a home in the 100 block of East 5th to allegedly intimidate a victim or for a sexually motivated crime, according to police. The mother of the victim found him in her daughters bed. He was later found inside the garage of that home.

The final charge of criminal threat is alleged to have occurred on February 15, where he allegedly threatened to cut another person’s head off. Saying once all this is over he would go to the victim’s mothers home and take care of her.

Judge Tim Chambers has also scheduled a pretrial hearing for Friday.
Ward has another case where he was originally arrested for burglary after he allegedly stole some copper pipes from the construction site at the Hutchinson Sports Arena, then took the pipes to Midwest Iron and Metal and sold them for cash. In doing so, he apparently signed papers saying the items were his. The state charged him with making false writing.

Ward is also alleged to have made contact with the alleged victim urging her to not show in court to testify telling her she wouldn’t be in trouble if she told them she simply forgot. Schroeder charged him with another count of Intimidation of a witness.

Those cases are still pending a preliminary hearing and is scheduled as part of a waiver-status docket on Wednesday.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Prosecutors are appealing a decision to overturn the conviction of a man accused of setting a fire that destroyed a Topeka apartment building and killed one tenant.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that a Shawnee County judge ruled last month that Frank Jerome “Chicago” Robinson wasn’t fairly convicted and should be retried.

Robinson had been serving a 36-year prison sentence after jurors convicted him of reckless second-degree murder and aggravated arson in the 2006 fire that killed 53-year-old Marvina Washington. Several other people escaped, including a woman who was badly injured while jumping.

Robinson’s attorneys had argued that his trial counsel was ineffective.

Shawnee County District Attorney’s office chief of staff Matt Patterson says efforts are underway to notify surviving victims, witnesses and Washington’s family about the decision.
