KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After helping the Fort Hays State University women’s soccer team give up just one goal in 279 minutes of play over the weekend, senior CheyAnn Queener has been named MIAA Women’s Soccer Co-Defensive Player of the Week, announced Tuesday by the league office. Queener shared the honor with Central Missouri’s Abby Rhodes.

Queener helped anchor a defense that was stellar all weekend, giving FHSU its first 3-0 start in program history. The Tigers picked up a pair of shutouts, allowing an average of five shots per match against a trio of NSIC opponents. Queener and the rest of the back line surrendered just four shots on goal all weekend.

The Colorado Springs, Colo. native aided FHSU in limiting Southwest Minnesota State to six shots (two on goal) in a 3-0 win Thursday before holding Upper Iowa to just four shots (one on goal) in another 3-0 win Saturday. Minot State managed just five shots (one on goal) in a 2-1 overtime win for FHSU on Monday, with the lone shot on goal being a penalty kick.

The Tigers will look to extend their winning streak this weekend when they host Northwestern Oklahoma State in their home opener on Sunday, September 11. First kick from FHSU Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Harry L. Kennedy

Harry L. Kennedy, 77, of Russell, Kansas, died on Friday, September 02, 2016, at the Robert J. Dole Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.

Harry entered life on Earth November 27, 1938, in Russell County, Kansas, the son of Gerald and Katherine (Nault) Kennedy. Harry was well loved, and lived a well-lived life. He was a gruff man, with a gentle heart, and showed little outward affection, but loved his family unconditionally.
Harry’s work ethic was without question. He was in the army, two years active, two years inactive, and two years ready reserve. He worked for Clayton Befort hauling grain. He also worked as a welder for Lawrence Nesler, and as a rough neck for Morton Spector. He then went to work for Red Tiger Drilling Company driving the wench truck & rig for almost 30 years. He was proud of his truck driving skills, and later driving children in the school bus. His goal was to beat this cancer and climb back in his bus to get the children to school. We laughed about his ability to recall dates when telling us stories; he can remember old actors and actresses, which movies and what year they were performed. He loved cars, old and new, also music and movies. He loved his old records and 8 tracks, which consumed an entire room in his home. His favorite things to do were fishing and camping, and was a camp host in Colorado for 5 years. Harry was a strong man and he refused to slow down as he got older. Harry rarely complained in his pain. He married Margaret Mitchell on January 29th, 1961 in a double ring wedding ceremony with her brother Fred and wife Virginia. To this union, three children were born. Alisa (Michael)Goff, Thomas (Melissa), and Steven (Lori). He had 8 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren and always had his dogs by his side.

Margaret preceded him in death August 2nd , 1989. He then married Martha Smith September 14, 2002, and gained a step-daughter, Linda Miller (John). He had 5 step-grandsons and two step-granddaughters, as well as 6 step-great granddaughters, and 3 step-great grandsons.

He is survived by his wife, Martha, his sister Barbara Yost, and a brother Benny Kennedy, as well as many nieces and nephews. He loved growing up with his brothers and sisters and continues his close relationship with his sister Bobbie.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, his brothers Jerry, Larry, and Kenny as well as his sister Carol Jean.

A memorial service to celebrate Harry’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, September 08, 2016, at the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Russell, Kansas, with Pastor Michael Eurit officiating. Cremation has preceded the services and his ashes will be inurned at the Russell City Cemetery immediately following the church service. Military Rites will be performed by the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240. Memorials may be given to the Otterbein United Methodist Church Building Fund or High Plains Humane Society in Hays and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

The Chamber Singers will be performing at the Homecoming assembly on Sep. 30

Each year, the Chamber Singers perform three different songs accompanied by choreography.

“I would definitely recommend everyone come to the assembly,” senior Jeremy Claude said. “I think it will really showcase what we have to offer as a group.” This is the first year Claude has been involved with Chamber Singers.

Junior Shelby Knoll said she was nervous for beginning the dances.

“I was afraid of getting overwhelmed and forgetting the moves,” Knoll said. “It turned out to be really fun and a great experience.”

hhs chamber singers 2Knoll said her favorite part of the choreography was the free style dancing. “I can just do what I want and not forget a dance move,” Knoll said.

Sophomore Hannah McGuire said she was nervous for her first Homecoming performance.

“My favorite part of the choreography is all the sass we can put into dancing,” McGuire said. “At first I was pretty hesitant but it was actually a lot of fun.”

Knoll said she would advise everyone to attend the assembly.

“I think it will be so much fun for everyone to watch,” Knoll said. “We are all working hard to make it the best performance possible.”

Don’t let the bed bugs bite!

Ellis Co. Extension

In recent years, bed bug infestations have increased. While these pests are most often associated with clutter and filth, they have also been reported in the finest hotels and living accommodations. There is no specific explanation for the resurgence of bed bugs, although increased international travel and pesticides with reduced residual activity are thought to have contributed.

On Thursday, September 15th, at 7:00 PM, the Ellis County Extension Office is hosting an informational bed bug program called “Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite!” This program will take place in the back meeting room of the Ellis County Extension Office at 601 Main St. in Hays. K-State Research and Extension Entomologist, Dr. J.P. Michaud, will provide information on the life cycle of bed bugs, what to look for, and steps to take if you find some.

This program is free to the public but it is requested that those interested in attending pre-register with the Ellis County Extension Office at (785) 628-9430, no later than Tuesday, September 13th.

If the thought of bed bugs makes your skin crawl, then this program is for you. Plan to join us on September 15th for “Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite!”
