Community mourns death of Kansas police dog

FINNEY COUNTY – Many in southwest Kansas are mourning the loss of a popular, retired member of the law enforcement community.

Due to health reasons, Garden City Police K9 Rico recently had to be euthanized, according to a social media report.

Rico served the Garden City Police Department from September 2006 until he retired from service in July 2012.

Rico was handled by two different Garden City Police Officers throughout his career.

Rico participated in multiple criminal apprehensions and numerous seizures of narcotics during his service protecting the community of Garden City .

Rico spent his retirement years living with his original handler.

During Rico’s retirement, he developed several habits; such as having a toy in his mouth for hours, eating endlessly and sleeping.
