Kansas man accused of stealing pickup to buy meth

RENO COUNTY– A Kansas man was jailed on Tuesday after he allegedly led Sheriff Deputies on a high-speed chase in Reno County.

Michael DeShazo, 27, Hutchinson, is accused of stealing an older model pickup at a Hutchinson convenience store.

Just before 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Reno County Sheriff Deputies spotted him at Avenue C and Pierce in Nickerson and attempted to make a stop.

He led deputies on a short chase until he crashed into a tree in the 300 block of North Thompson in Nickerson.

He was arrested for suspicion of felony flee and elude, possession of stolen property, possession of marijuana, criminal damage to property, that being damage to the truck, criminal possession of a weapon, brass knuckles and driving while suspended.

According to statements made in court, he intended to sell the vehicle for methamphetamine.

DeShazo is jailed on a $12,500 bond and his request for a bond reduction was denied.

He was out on bond for another case where he’s charged with aggravated failure to appear and has prior convictions for drugs, aggravated assault and obstruction.

He is scheduled to be back in court next week to learn if the state has filed formal charges.
