FINNEY COUNTY- Law enforcement authorities in Finney County continue to investigate a fatal Saturday, November 26, hit and run accident.

On Monday evening, police arrested Rafael Lopez, 62, Garden City, for his involvement in the accident, according to a media release.

Lopez had earlier responded to the Law Enforcement Center voluntarily.

Just before 7 p.m. on Saturday, police were called to the area of 700 W. Kansas Avenue for a reported pedestrian accident.

First responders located Maria Leonarda Macias De Ubiarco, 80, Garden City, dead in the roadway.

The initial investigation revealed Ubiarco was crossing the street southbound on foot in the 700 Block of W. Kansas Ave near Mildred Drive when she was struck by a light colored Chrysler PT Cruiser that was traveling East on Kansas Avenue. The PT Cruiser fled the scene.

Lopez is being held in the Finney County Jail on charges of Leaving the Scene of an Accident involving a Fatality, Failing to Provide Information at the Scene of an Accident, and Interference with Law Enforcement.

A search warrant was also executed at Lopez’ residence and the vehicle involved was recovered.
