Pope Francis extends special permission on abortion

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis is allowing all priests to absolve the “grave sin” of women who have abortions, extending special permission he had granted them in 2015 for the just-ended Holy Year of Mercy.

Francis wrote in a document made public Monday by the Vatican “there is no sin that God’s mercy cannot reach and wipe away when it finds a repentant heart,” while staunchly reiterating that “abortion is a grave sin, since it puts an end to an innocent life.”

Numbers of old Kansas train depots continue dwindling

STAFFORD, Kan. (AP) — Some Kansas towns are grappling with how to save the dwindling number of historic railroad depots.

The Wichita Eagle reports that in the state that had nearly 2,000 depots less than a century ago, the Kansas Historical Society estimates that fewer than 180 old depots remain. Thirty-two are listed on the state or national historic registers.

Many of the depot brick buildings, which often replaced wooden ones, were built at the turn of the 20th century in county seats or other important towns. But rail lines — and by extension, depots — took a hit as the nation’s highway system grew.

Several Kansas towns have worked to preserve the history. Dodge City, Mulvane, El Dorado and Marysville all have renovated their depots.

Rockhurst edges FHSU men’s soccer in NCAA II quarterfinals

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State fell in the national quarterfinal match for a third consecutive year as Rockhurst capitalized on one mistake early in the second half to escape Hays with a 1-0 decision. The Tigers outshot the Hawks, but saw their season end at 14-5-1 overall. Rockhurst moved to 18-2-3 overall.

All four of Fort Hays State’s first half shots were great goal-scoring opportunities, but the frame of the goal got in the way on three of the attempts. At 16:12 Maurizio Costa had a great try from just inside the 18-yard box hit the right post past a diving keeper. Three minutes later, the Tigers were denied once more on a flurry of attempts at the goal. Mauricio Castorino had a one-on-one with the keeper Logan Feldmann that he shot right into Feldmann’s hands. Michael Cole collected the rebound and Feldmann made another save as the ball rebounded out near the top of the box. Derick Gonzalez struck the ball and it hit the crossbar. The Tigers could have easily scored twice in those offensive situations and it would ultimately come back to sting in the end.

The mistake by the Tigers occurred in the 49th minute when Killian Gorman was unable to get enough on a header intended for goalkeeper Michael Yantz. Rockhurst had sent two passes forward from Sal Caruso and Adam Michel that got to the top of the box and with Gorman not able to get enough pace on his header, Kaleb Jackson dashed in to chip the ball over the hands of Yantz for the only goal of the match.

The Tigers had two more great opportunities in the final 10 minutes of the match. Arsenio Chamorro had a shot in near the net off a pass that found a diving Feldmann in the 82nd minute. In the match’s final minute, Derick Gonzalez also had a strike in near the goal that once again found Feldmann’s arms and the Hawks ran out the clock.

Feldmann had seven saves in goal to send the Hawks to the national semifinals for the second straight year. He moved to 18-2-3 with the win. Michael Yantz made three saves for FHSU and went to 8-5-1 on the season. Fort Hays State outshot Rockhurst 13-8 in the match.

The Tigers are now the three-time defending Central Region Champion and this was the first time FHSU earned the right to host the Super Regional on its home field.

Buccaneers snap Chiefs’ 5-game win streak

Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jameis Winston sliced up a Kansas City defense missing top cornerback Marcus Peters, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers held on for a 19-17 victory Sunday that snapped the Chiefs’ five-game winning streak.

Winston threw for 331 yards to help set up four field goals by Roberto Aguayo, and hit tight end Robert Cross for a touchdown with just over 6 minutes left to give the Buccaneers (5-5) a cushion.

The Chiefs (7-3) marched swiftly downfield, and Alex Smith hit Albert Wilson with a short touchdown pass with just over 2 minutes left. But their defense couldn’t stop Mike Evans on third-and-3 just moments later, and the big wide receiver’s sixth reception gave the Buccaneers a first down.

By the time Kansas City finally forced a punt, there was 8 seconds left in the game.

It was the Buccaneers’ fifth straight win over Kansas City dating to 1993, and it snapped a home winning streak for the Chiefs that dated to a loss to Chicago on Oct. 11, 2015.

The Chiefs, who had won 17 of their last 19 regular-season games, were done in by a popgun offense that has repeatedly fizzled in the red zone. They had to settle for a field goal by Cairo Santos on their first trip and Alex Smith threw an interception in the end zone midway through the fourth quarter.

Smith was 23 of 30 for 268 yards in another inconsistent performance, while Spencer Ware was bottled up much of the afternoon. The bruising running back finished with just 69 yards rushing.

WINCHESTER PLAYS

Chiefs long snapper James Winchester played one day after the funeral for his father, Michael, who was shot to death at an Oklahoma City airport on Tuesday. Police believe the elder Winchester, an employee for Southwest Airlines, was gunned down in retaliation for losing his own airline job.

HOUSTON RETURNS

Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston made his season debut, though he hardly factored into the game. The four-time Pro Bowl pick has been out after surgery in February to repair the ACL in his left knee.

INJURIES

Buccaneers: Starting cornerback Brent Grimes left in the first half with a quad injury and did not return. Backup offensive lineman Ben Gottschalk left with a knee injury.

Chiefs: Outside linebacker Dee Ford, the NFL sack leader with 10 coming in, did not play in the second half with a hamstring injury. Peters (hip pointer), starting defensive tackle Jaye Howard (knee) and wide receiver Jeremy Maclin (groin) were inactive.

UP NEXT

Buccaneers: Return home next weekend to take on another Super Bowl favorite, Seattle.

Chiefs: Head to Denver for a Sunday night showdown between AFC West contenders.

SALINA, Kan. (AP) — Visitors to a rural area in central Kansas might be surprised to find several people working to refurbish a Cold War submarine that can go 8,000 feet deep in the ocean.

They’re involved in helping 29-year-old Salina resident Scott Waters achieve his dream of exploring the deep sea.

The Kansas City Star reports that Waters bought a Pisces VI sub from an international company last December and hauled it home from Wisconsin. He and a team of 10 experts plan to pull it apart and put it back together using digital technology.

After that, he’ll offer the modern submersible for scientific research and to the film industry.

Waters, the head of his family’s hardware store chain, thinks the submarine will be ready to launch in two years.

RENO COUNTY — One of three teen suspects who entered pleas in association with a robbery at knifepoint outside Walmart in Hutchinson was sentenced Friday to two years and 10 months in prison.

Two of the suspects wrapped their shirts around their heads, pulled a knife and robbed the four teens of $85.
