Boys: TMP 61, Olathe North 54
The TMP Monarchs fell behind early to 6A Olathe North in the opening round of the 34th Annual Gerald Mitchell Shootout. The Eagles used at 13-0 run midway through the first quarter to grab a double digit lead at 17-6. The two teams would score four points each with Olathe North holding a 21-10 advantage into the second quarter.
Olathe North extended their lead in the second quarter to as many as 14 points but TMP was able to close the gap to 10 points, 37-27, at halftime. TMP struggled with turnovers in the first half committing 17 of them in the first two quarters while the Eagles had only 7. The Monarchs would only commit four the rest of the way.
TMP started making a run in the third quarter, cutting the Olathe North lead to four points and the game was on. The Monarchs took the lead for good midway through the fourth quarter at 52-51, their first since a 6-4 first quarter lead, and would never trail again winning 61-54. Hayden Lowe led the way for TMP with 18 points and Creighton Renz added 16 to lead the Monarchs. TMP will face Hays High in the semi-finals at 7pm on Friday at Hays High School.
Girls: TMP 56, Olathe North 43
TMP shook off a sluggish start and held off a feisty Olathe North team to pick up a win in the opening round of the Hays City Shootout. TMP hurt themselves with six first quarter turnovers. The Lady Monarchs led 13-12 after the first quarter and extended their lead to six points, 27-21, at halftime.
TMP came out on fire in the second half and quickly extended their lead to double digits. The lead grew to 17 points and the Lady Monarchs settled for a 47-32 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Olathe North would not go away as the Lady Eagles cut the TMP lead to eight points with a little over four minutes to play in the game. TMP was able to hold off the charge and pick up the 56-43 win.
Megan Koenigsman led three Lady Monarchs in double figures with 15 points. Madyson Koerner scored 14 and Kayla Vitzum 12. TMP will play Hays High in the semi-finals on Friday at 5:15pm at Hays High School.
