HUTCHINSON – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is working on an independent investigation into Tuesday’s fatal officer-involved shooting at a home in Hutchinson, according to a media release.

Once completed, the findings will be turned over to the Reno County Attorney for review.

The KBI had agents and a crime scene reconstruction team on the scene Tuesday. Preliminary information indicates that shortly after 2:00 a.m., two officers from the Hutchinson Police Department arrived at a residence at 3503 North Ridgewood in Hutchinson in response to a 911 call. After entering the residence, they encountered a man with a firearm. Both officers discharged their firearms, fatally injuring him.

The victim was later identified as 55-year-old Richard R. Jones of Hutchinson.

No further information was released late Tuesday.
