Recall issued for Dodge Durango, Jeep SUV due to fuel leak

RecallDETROIT (AP) — Fiat Chrysler is recalling nearly 89,000 cars and SUVs to fix possible fuel leaks or problems with windshield wipers.

The most serious recall covers nearly 35,000 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs worldwide from the 2016 model year. All have 3.6-liter V6 engines. A fuel tube may have been damaged in manufacturing, and that could cause a gas leak and fire.

Fiat Chrysler says an employee found a leak in one vehicle and no fires have been reported. Dealers will replace fuel injector rails and lower intake manifolds if needed.

Supreme Court dismisses case over your high ATM fees

Credit CardWASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has dismissed a case it took up earlier this year involving accusations that Visa and MasterCard illegally fixed ATM prices.

The credit card companies wanted the justices to overturn a lower court ruling that said the antitrust case could move forward. The high court agreed to hear their appeal in June.

But the justices dismissed the case Thursday, saying the companies are now making a different legal argument than the one the Supreme Court agreed to decide.

The lawsuit filed by consumers and independent ATM operators claims the payment processors illegally coordinated with Bank of America Corp., JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Wells Fargo & Co. to adopt anticompetitive fees.

A federal judge dismissed the case in 2013, but a federal appeals court revived it last year.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — The City of Lawrence has filed a lawsuit to terminate an incentive agreement with a hotel, citing personal purchases and falsified retail sales.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the lawsuit claims the developers of The Oread hotel fraudulently collected tax rebates for hundreds of unrelated purchases, including landscaping for his home as well as a cabin in Colorado and the rental of a party tent. The lawsuit, filed Wednesday, also says the development group defrauded the city and engaged in activity involving wire and mail fraud.

Lawrence officials are seeking to recoup more than $400,000 in monetary damages as well as an end to the incentive agreement.

The developers have denied the allegations.

FHSU men’s soccer hopes for super showing at home

They have played only six of their 18 games at home this season, so they have become accustomed to playing quality soccer after long road trips.

But don’t think that members of the Fort Hays State University men’s soccer team aren’t excited about playing on their home field this weekend when it hosts an NCAA Division II Super Regional.

The nationally ranked Tigers (16th in NCAA Division II) will play host to 20th-ranked Lindenwood (Mo.) University at the FHSU Soccer Stadium Friday in the Central Region championship match. Start time is set for 7 p.m., following the Midwest Region title match between two other Missouri universities, No. 6 ranked Rockhurst and Drury, at 4 p.m.

The winners of those two games will meet at 1 p.m. Sunday at the FHSU stadium for a chance to advance to the national semifinals Dec. 1 in Kansas City, Mo.

Fort Hays State has performed well no matter where it has played this season — posting a 13-4-1 mark, including a 5-1 record on its own field. The Tigers’ only loss at home this season was a 3-2 decision to Lindenwood on Oct. 9. Since then, the Tigers won six of their last seven matches to close out the regular season.

Thirteen of the Tigers’ matches have been played all across the country, playing as far away as Washington State and traveling south to Texas and north to North Dakota.

“Well, we’re very used to traveling,” said Brett Parker, who has served as the team’s head coach since FHSU started its soccer program in 2011.

“With that being said, we’d much rather play at home,” he added. “There are a lot of advantages to not traveling: getting to sleep in your own bed, familiarity with your surroundings, not tired from traveling, just a lot of things that could make a difference.”

No matter where it has played, FHSU has built a successful program and will be looking for its third consecutive Central Region title.

Parker hopes this year’s squad, which he said probably is FHSU’s deepest team ever, can advance the farthest in post-season action.

The Tigers have lost their Super Regional championship matches the last two years, including one on penalty kicks to Rockhurst on the Hawks’ home field last year.

“We’ve been agonizingly close,” Parker said of advancing to the final four of the national playoffs.

So far, the Tigers have met all their season goals, including earning the No. 1 seed in the Central Region to get the Super Regional in Hays.

“That was one of our goals, to host a regional, and we accomplished that,” Parker said. “We did what we needed to do to host it.”

Nonetheless, Parker said, there is just one goal in mind as Fort Hays State prepares for Lindenwood. It will be the third time that the Tigers and Lions have met this season, each winning on the other’s home field.

“We definitely know each other pretty well, know what to expect,” Parker said. “Our main goal is to win Friday night. That’s all we can be concerned with. There’s no need to look past that.”

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — The U.S. Embassy in Jordan is refuting Amman’s claim that American soldiers sparked a deadly shooting at a Jordan military base this month by disobeying orders from Jordanian soldiers.

Three U.S. Army sergeants — Matthew Lewellen of Lawrence Kansas, Kevin McEnroe and James Moriarty from the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) from Fort Campbell, Kentucky — were killed in the shooting outside the base in southern Jordan.

Embassy spokesman Eric Barbee says U.S. investigators are considering all possible motives and “have not yet ruled out terrorism as a potential motive.”

After the shooting, Jordan’s state media reported that the slain American trainers had sparked a firefight by disobeying direct orders from the Jordanians.

Barbee told The Associated Press on Thursday that there’s “absolutely no credible evidence” for this claim.

Universities in Kansas propose housing, dining rate hikes

EMPORIA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas’ state universities are proposing raising housing and dining rates starting next year.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the board received the proposed rates from the six state universities Wednesday. The largest rate increase would be at the University of Kansas, with a 4.9 percent.

Kansas State University, Wichita State University, Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University and Pittsburg State University all proposed rate hikes of less than 4 percent.

Proposed rate increases were generally driven by anticipated inflationary costs and facility maintenance and enhancements.
