DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Latest on two officers in the Des Moines, Iowa, area who were killed in what authorities describe as ambush-style attacks (all times local):

9:40 a.m.

Police say the suspect in the killings of two Des Moines area police officers is in custody.

Des Moines police Sgt. Paul Parizek says Scott Michael Greene was taken into custody without incident Wednesday morning in Dallas County, just west of Des Moines.

Greene is suspected in the killing of a Des Moines police officer and an Urbandale police officer earlier Wednesday.

___

9:15 a.m.

The man wanted in connection with the killing of two Des Moines area police officers has a record of confrontation with police and others.

Iowa court records show 46-year-old Scott Michael Greene, of Urbandale, was jailed and charged with interference with official acts after resisting Urbandale police officers trying to pat him down for a weapon on April 10, 2014. A complaint signed by an Urbandale officer says Greene resisted verbal commands, was hostile and combative. It says he was known to be armed. He entered a guilty plea and was fined.

Two days later Urbandale police were called to answer a complaint of harassment at the apartment complex where Greene lived. The complaint says he threatened to kill another man during a confrontation in the parking lot. He was charged with harassment, pleaded guilty and received a suspended jail sentence and a year of probation.

Records show he completed a court-ordered substance abuse and psychological evaluation.

Des Moines police say Greene is a suspect in the shootings early Wednesday in Des Moines and the suburb of Urbandale.

9 a.m.

Police say a “series of leads and investigative tips” led them to identify a suspect in the killing of two Des Moines area police officers.

Des Moines Sgt. Paul Parizek wouldn’t give details about how investigators determined 46-year-old Scott Michael Greene, of Urbandale, was a suspect in the separate shootings early Wednesday in Des Moines and the suburb of Urbandale.

Parizek says officers don’t know where Greene is located.

Police have closed long stretches of the roads, about two miles apart, where the officers were found in their cars.

The Urbandale officer was dead at the scene and the Des Moines officer died at a hospital.

___

The Des Moines and Urbandale Police Departments have identified a suspect in the murder of two police officers on Wednesday morning.

Scott Michael Greene, 46, is being sought by investigators.

Greene is 5’ 11” / 180 lbs with brown hair and green eyes. Greene was last known to be driving a blue 2011 Ford F-150 with Iowa license plate 780 YFR.

The truck has a silver colored topper with a ladder rack. Greene is believed to be armed and should be considered dangerous. If seen, please do not approach Greene, but call 911 and report his location.

5:10 a.m.

Police in Des Moines, Iowa, say two officers who were killed in ambush-style attacks were both shot while they were sitting in their patrol cars.

Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek said Wednesday that authorities are developing suspect information but there was nothing that authorities were ready to share with the public.

Parizek was emotional during a news conference. He says there is “clearly danger” right now for police officers in the area because the officers were gunned down while sitting in their cars doing nothing wrong. He says the department has doubled up its officers to better protect them.

The first officer, an Urbandale officer, was shot about 1:06 a.m. About 20 minutes later, a Des Moines officer was found shot about 2 miles away.

PAWNEE, Okla. (AP) — A magnitude 4.5 earthquake has shaken north-central Oklahoma.

The earthquake occurred at 11:27 p.m. The U.S. Geological Survey reports the epicenter was near Pawnee, about 70 miles northeast of Oklahoma City.

Pawnee Police say that preliminary reports show no significant damage.

The USGS originally estimated the earthquake at magnitude 4.1. A magnitude 3.3 quake was recorded Saturday near Pawnee.

According to social media reports, the quake Tuesday night could be felt as far away as Kansas City and St. Joseph, Missouri.

An increase in magnitude 3.0 and stronger earthquakes in Oklahoma has been linked to the underground disposal of wastewater from oil and natural gas production. State regulators have ordered some disposal wells to be permanently shut down and others to reduce the amount of wastewater they return underground.

Kansas college for healthcare careers shocks students, closes

Heritage College in Wichita-google image

SEDGWICK COUNTY – Officials with Heritage college in Wichita announced on Tuesday they are closing. The school for students studying health care careers has served the region for over 30 years. On the school web site, they left students a message.

“It is with great disappointment that we announce that Heritage College and Heritage Institute are permanently closing on November 1, 2016. The closure will affect all 10 campuses.

This is very difficult news for everyone affected particularly our students, teachers, and staff.

The reason for the campus closures is that Heritage does not have the cash to continue to run its business. Numerous factors contributed to the circumstances including declining student population and a continued, decreased demand for the services of for-profit schools. Heritage did not close due to wrongdoing or a forced closure by a regulatory body, and we did explore a range of options that would have enabled the campuses to remain open serving students. Unfortunately, the options were not viable and our efforts proved unsuccessful.

We thank our faculty, staff and, mostly, our students. They had the courage to pursue a new career path and we were honored to help them achieve their goals.

Please send inquiries to: [email protected]

Weston Educational, Inc operates Heritage College Campuses in Wichita, Denver, Kansas City, Missouri; Orange County, California; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Columbus, Ohio; Cleveland, Ohio; and Little Rock, Arkansas. The company also operates Heritage Institute Locations (Non Heritage College Campus Format) in Fort Myers, Florida; and Jacksonville, Florida.

Kansas holds off Washburn in exhibition opener

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Jayhawk faithful received their first chance to welcome Kansas basketball’s group of newcomers inside game-atmosphere Allen Fieldhouse on Tuesday night as the third-ranked Jayhawks defeated Washburn, 92-74.

Senior guard Frank Mason III led the Jayhawks in scoring, nearly reaching a triple-double, with 21 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Junior guard Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk drained four 3-pointers to finish with 16 points, while freshman guard Josh Jackson poured in 14 second-half points.

Josh Jackson

Jackson was in the starting lineup for Wednesday’s contest, highlighting five Jayhawks who made their debut. Joining Jackson who ran under the tunnel to James Naismith Court for the first time were freshmen Mitch Lightfoot and Udoka Azukuike, and juniors Dwight Coleby and Tucker Vang.

“It was good for our freshmen to get an eye-opening experience,” Kansas head coach Bill Self said. “I’d say we labored; it wasn’t a great outing by our freshmen but certainly I don’t know that that is all bad because it opens their eyes to things we need to do a lot better.”

Kansas shot 54 percent from the floor, while holding the Ichabods to 38 percent shooting. The majority of Washburn’s 45-to-44 rebounding advantage came from pulling down 19 offensive boards off the glass.

Washburn struck first with a 3-pointer by David Salach just under a minute into regulation. KU junior Devonte’ Graham responded by making the first bucket of the season for the Jayhawks – a 3-point to tie the game at three. Azubuike was the first player off the bench for Lucas, who committed two fouls in the first two minutes of the game. The 7-footer from Nigeria contributed early with a blocked shot, followed by a dunk on the opposite end of the floor to put Kansas up, 7-3.

KU’s defense began to clamp down in the lane as Kansas began to pull away in the first half. Kansas held a 7-6 lead before going a 13-2 run to take a 20-8 lead at the 11:11 mark on a layup by sophomore guard Legerald Vick.

Washburn didn’t have a solution for Mason’s dribble-drive penetration, converting on a number of contested layups to pad the Jayhawks’ double-digit lead.

Graham connected with sophomore forward Carlton Bragg Jr., for a dunk to give Kansas a 26-16 lead at the 8:01 mark of the first half.

Jackson registered his third foul at the 5:37 mark of the first half, which limited his first-half playing time to nine minutes.

Lightfoot got fouled going to the bucket on three-straight possessions and converted three of his six free throws during that stretch as Kansas maintained a 39-28 lead.

Mason continued to go aggressive to rim as the first half was coming to a close, making an and-1 layup, 44-29. A late Washburn 5-0 flurry with a minute remaining in the first half cut KU’s lead to 10, but Graham and Mykhailiuk restored KU’s cushion to 16 points with a pair of 3-pointers with under 35 second to go in the half.

Mason headlined the opening half with 11 points, eight assists and four rebounds as Kansas went into the locker room with a 50-34 lead. The Jayhawks shot 61 percent from the floor in the first half.

Washburn started the second half on a run 9-2 run, cutting KU’s 16-point lead down to nine points with 17:01 left to play.

Jackson began to show glimpses of his offensive prowess which garnered him so much attention during the recruiting process as one of the top prospects in the country. The Detroit native scored his first basket as a Jayhawk on a layup with 13:50 reminding in the game, putting Kansas up 62-49.

Kansas pulled away in the closing stages of regulation with an 11-0 run, capped off by a pair of free throws by Mykhailiuk with 4:26 remaining which gave KU a 85-63 lead.

Fan-favorite, senior guard Tyler Self, checked in the game late and scored two points before ushering in a 92-74 victory for the Jayhawks.

Frank Mason II stuffed the stat sheet for a triple-double with 21 points, 10 rebounds assists and nine rebounds on Tuesday. Mason would have become the first Jayhawk to record a triple-double during exhibition play since Jeff Withey posted 18 points, 12 rebounds and 10 blocks exactly five years ago on Nov. 1, 2011, against Pittsburg State.
