Suspect in Kansas grocery story robbery formally charged

Williams-photo Reno Co.

RENO COUNTY — One of the two suspects arrested for the robbery of two Dillon’s stores in Hutchinson was back in court Thursday for the formal reading of charges.

D’Angelo Williams, 19, Manhattan is now charged with one count of robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery. When District Judge Tim Chambers told the defendant he’s accused of robbing the Dillon’s at 4th & Pershing, he blurted out, “ya I did.”

Judge Chambers then informed him that he shouldn’t say anymore.

The state noted that it thought the bond of $10,000 was low.

Judge Chambers increased the bond to $25,000 and his case moves to a waiver status docket on Jan. 11.

The co-defendant, 22-year-old Majesty Wade, faces two counts of robbery for being involved with the robberies at both Dillon’s locations.

Wade is jailed on a bond at $20,000 and is expected to appear before a judge Friday.

On Oct. 12, an unknown suspect wearing a mask who tried to escape on a bicycle robbed the Dillon’s store located at 1321 N. Main in Hutchinson. Wade is suspected of being that person.

On Oct. 21, another unknown masked suspect robbed the Dillon’s store on 4th and Pershing. Williams is suspected of being that robber.

UPDATE: Freezing Rain Advisory continues until 8 a.m.

Recall for Dodge, Jeep SUVs; engines could stall

DETROIT (AP) — Fiat Chrysler is recalling nearly 50,000 small SUVs worldwide because the engines could stall while being driven.

The recall covers the Dodge Journey and Jeep Compass and Patriot from the 2016 model year. All have 2-liter or 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines.

The company says a sensor connector in the engine can malfunction. That can cause the SUVs to either stall or fail to start.

Fiat Chrysler says it doesn’t know of any crashes or injuries due to the problem.

Most of the recalled vehicles are in the U.S., and all were built during an 11-week period last spring.

Dealers will replace the sensor connector for the crankshaft and camshaft. Owners will be notified about when to bring vehicles in for repairs. Owners with questions can call FCA at (800) 853-1403.

Man sentenced for 2015 Christmas Eve stabbing death

Olivas- photo Sedgwick Co.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — One of five people charged in the stabbing death of a Wichita man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Diego Olivas was sentenced Wednesday for second-degree murder and kidnapping in the death of 42-year-old Moises Arias-Aranda. His body was found near Park City in a vehicle on Christmas Eve of 2015.

Court documents show Olivas targeted Arias-Aranda because a friend claimed he had raped someone. A defense attorney said at Wednesday’s hearing the rape never happened and that the woman who claimed rape was responsible for the death.

But Judge Bruce Brown said “no one is responsible for making you do anything.”

Much of the Vine Street corridor was in the dark for a short time Thursday evening when a power pole was struck by a semi-truck at Centennial and General Hays at 7:49 p.m.

screen-shot-2016-12-22-at-8-14-04-pm

The outage affected approximately 1,500 customers, according to Midwest Energy’s outage viewer, but was short-lived, with all but a handful back in service in a few minutes. Check Hays Post for details or click HERE for information from Midwest Energy.

According to Hays Police Cpl. David Vilaysing at the scene, power was out on the east and west sides of Vine Street from 13th Street north to 27 Street.

The traffic lights were also out at 13th and 27th. HPD officers directed traffic until the power was rerouted and restored to the lights after about 20 minutes, Vilaysing said.

A truck driver from Oklahoma with a load of freight for PetSense in the Centennial Plaza shopping center, was attempting to turn the corner at Centennial and General Hays and then pull into the area behind the store.

The Centennial Plaza shopping center was dark and without electricity Thursday evening. Patrons left the shops. leaving the parking lot nearly empty.

“He said it was a pretty tight turn and he just clipped the pole,” Vilaysing said. A wire on top of the pole hit a light and ground it out, causing the power outage. “There was very little damage to the trailer and no injuries,” he added.

Midwest Energy workers were on the scene righting the pole and then bracing it. They plan to do a more permanent fix Friday morning.

Power was still out in the Centennial Plaza, Love’s Country Store and Osaki Japanese Restaurant as late as 9 p.m. Vilaysing estimated the power would be restored within an hour or so.

Kansas group wants grass burning limits for Flint Hills

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas environmental group is urging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to order the state to impose tighter controls on grass burning in the Flint Hills region.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports the Kansas chapter of the Sierra Club wants the agency to order the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to adopt a mitigation plan to protect air quality in the region.

Ranchers in the Flint Hills burn grasslands in the spring to kill off invasive weeds and shrubs, creating thick smoke that some officials say is a concern for people with respiratory issues.

4 suspended Kansas cheerleaders no longer with program

Snapchat

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — A University of Kansas official says four Kansas cheerleaders who were suspended from the team after the discovery of a Snapchat photo that mentioned the KKK are no longer with the program.

The Kansas City Star reports that athletic department officials originally became aware of the social media post last month. The photo depicted three men in sweaters, each with a “K” representing “Kansas” on their chests. White letters across the photo read “Kkk go trump.”

The university suspended the three male cheerleaders and the cheerleader whose Snapchat account the photo was posted on.

Jim Marchiony, Kansas associate athletic director, said Thursday that three of the cheerleaders resigned their positions, and the fourth cheerleader graduated this semester.

Kansas educators seek return to familiar school funding formula

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) While Republican Gov. Sam Brownback talks about taking a new approach to funding Kansas public schools, educators are hoping lawmakers will return to a familiar per-student formula.

Brownback has told reporters he wants a new formula to focus on student performance.

But superintendents and local school boards expressed their desire for something more traditional in emails to the governor’s office this fall.

They’re looking to have the state’s $4.1 billion a year in annual aid distributed per student, giving extra “weightings” to each student with special needs.

With Brownback’s support, the GOP-dominated Legislature junked such a formula in 2015 in favor of stable grants of aid for each district.

But the change always was meant to be temporary, and lawmakers expect to consider a new formula next year.
